Cubase 12 Crashing Incessantly; Lost Productivity

Hi, all,

I hope someone can help me fix Cubase 12’s constant crashing on my Windows 10 PC. I am at my wit’s end and losing productivity, which is unacceptable. I never had any of these issues with versions 10 or 11. Cubase will hang on loading an existing project, it will crash randomly while inside a project, and/or crash when trying to close a project.

I have attached the last 30(!) or so DMP files in the hopes that someone more knowledgeable can help me shed some light on what is happening.

How to analyse Cubase crash dumps on Windows

Since this came up recently, I decided to write a little tutorial on how to analyze Cubase Crash dumps on Windows 10 (and probably 11, too). This can be helpful if you want to find out if it is a specific plugin that is the culprit for the crash. I opened a few at random from the list, and two of them mentioned Kontakt, one mentioned SINE Player, and one didn’t mention anything useable, at least to me. All I do is look through the report, especially the portion after “Exception Record”

You can download WinDbg look at the report that WinDbg produces too. I think it would save you time in the unavoidable need for troubleshooting. Which is like a a fact of life

It might be helpful to check that you have the latest VST3 version of your plugins installed.
Furthermore it might be useful to disable the preferences from the previous Cubase version by renaming their preference folder. Do you know how to do that?

In order to disable all Cubase preferences, we would rename or move the folder in which they are contained. On Cubase’s next start it will create these preferences with factory settings.

1. Close all programs.
2. Open the “Run” command prompt by pressing the Windows logo key + R simultaneously.
   In the command line of the ‘Run’ window, enter one of the following path shortcuts::

• user specific installation (standard): %appdata%
• installation “for all users”: %programdata%
  Simply use %appdata% if you are in doubt.

3. A new Windows Explorer Window opens.
4. Locate the folder ‘Steinberg’ and locate the folder ‘Cubase 12_64’.
5. If you can’t find the folder or files, please try again using the other path shortcut.
6. Move the folder ‘Cubase 12_64’ to for example the Desktop (in order to be able to revert if necessary)

Next time you start Cubase, the deleted files will be rebuilt.
