When the old license server are shut-down you can not move licenses between dongles and get help from Steinberg to get it right, and you can still work. In worst case you might need to buy/rent/borrow a second hand dongle with license. When the new license servers are shut-down you are naked.
That being said, we have been pretty spoiled with backward/forward compatibility compared to other software. I still have SX3 working on Windows 10, and Cubase 11 on Windows 7. At a certain point, change has to happen and old tech will get left behind.
That being said, ditching Cubase 10.5 that quickly is a bit harsh⌠hmmâŚ
What if people are having trouble opening an old project they got out of their archives and they want to try using an older version of Cubase to open it?
I think youâre reading my reply wrong, not the original post.
I know theyâre skipping version 11.5, so Iâm hoping thereâs something to signify that, other than just dropping the dongle.
We are not going to shut down the eLicenser server any time soon. Maybe that announcement from ReFX caused some confusion. Of course there is going to be a decent period for the transition.
The good thing with Cubase is that opening old projects still works pretty well. Most of the times itâs the plug-ins that have been used that cause the trouble. But opening a Cubase SX project in the latest version of Cubase just works well in many situations.
I definitely am okay with the prospect of this new licensing system, donât think itâs as big of a deal as some making it to be⌠but⌠Iâd still choose dongle for my studio computer.
Maybe this isnât logistically feasible or economic, but I created this thread
to suggest that Steinberg create a new dongle that can be activated with the new licensing system and it work similar to the 1yr whereby once it is loaded onto the dongle, to be used elsewhere it would have to be taken off the dongle. If someone loses the dongle, just like now, they lose the license.
Users would have to order the dongle direct from Steinberg and pay the shipping. They could use the online system while they wait for the dongle to arrive.
If youâre giving users two licenses per product, someone could load one license onto dongle, and keep one for online. ie, dongle for studio, online for laptop/portable.
edit
my guess is though, %99 of people are just going to end up using the online, so catering new dongle development to 1% probably isnât worth it
Unfortunately that is not an option. The new system does not consider a dongle or let us simply continue to use the USB eLicenser.
The 30 days period already set-up this new licencing system for the future subscribtion modelâŚ
No we havenât been spoilt , itâs what some of us have been paying for and why we have stayed with Steinberg
Sorry to inform you, but the software was never yours to begin with⌠you just have a license to use it. Which you have to have a connection with internet for already.
Whatâs the big deal with getting connected once year, exactly? Donât you think itâs a little ridiculous in 2021 to ânot want internetâ? If itâs for safety, I get that. Then use another computer for it. Thatâs possible too. But right now, youâre complaining to complain. Not with a valid reason, tbh.
What a load of ballshit , you obviously know nothing , i ran Pc that have been off the internet for years . Good old dongle in the usb , load software NO INTERNET
And how did the dongle get the license, exactly?
Oh⌠thatâs right⌠internet!
Steinberg really does not owe you anything dude, they have to adapt with the times and the software either remains a benefit to you or it doesnât. When looking at it that way, very little is changing.
I donât think I ever expressed my opinion on either system. And thatâs because I really donât care. My computer is connected to the internet, I know what Iâm doing and I just accept that things change and roll with it.
Youâre making such a big deal out of it. Worst case scenario for you is getting a ânewâ license for a year on another computer. Thatâs it. Is that really worth fussing over?
Yes!
Because not all people are like you ⌠and I consider this a good thing.
Honestly, it wouldnât be a big deal for Steinberg to come up with choice, really.
Blackmagicâs Resolve Studio dongle shows how it can be done without the constant re-activation âfussâ.
I think because we are not getting a list of updated features some were expectingâŚ
It would be super awesome to get a Developer stream/preview and Q&A of new MIDI API.
This would give users a bit of insight into changes they could make to their studio.
Double the costs, double the problems. 2 types of servers would have to be maintained, 2 types of software activation needs to be maintained, etc etc. Itâs just not feasible and I get that.
Thereâs always a fight about licensing. Having a dongle sucks, because when you lose your dongle, you lose your license. Having online activation sucks too, because you have to have internet and all the other things Iâve read today.
In the end, Cubase has to protect their Intellectual Property somehow and according to the answers Iâve read so far, Steinberg is doing everything they can to make sure no users are left behind; solutions for everyone! And if not, theyâre willing to talk to you to find one for you. I really donât know what else we would want from a company?
Things canât always stay as they are. In Dutch we say something like: Standing still is walking backwards. Thereâs probably some equivalent in English too. The thing is⌠itâs 2021, there has been a lot of complaints about the USB-dongle and itâs time to move on. And itâs happening. So get with the program or find something else.
Gentlemen, please keep the discussion respectful.
I would just say please donât feel the need to rush out the 12 release ASAP to please impatient people. Take the time to really take care with workflow improvements and issue fixes. This could be an opportunity to turn over a new leaf and bring Cubase to the forefront like never before.
Looking forward to more news. Thanks Matthias.
Agreed. Steinberg are trying to demonstrate a willingness to listen to people and improve. Letâs keep it civil. Everybody on here is a human.
