Cubase 12 is coming in 2022

Just as always, yes. See the resale wizard on the Steinberg Website.

Yes

Yes, that’s the one because the activation will check for your old license to update it.

You will need the dongle to be able to run Cubase 11 or earlier versions, so it’s good to keep it as a backup, even after updating to C12.

Regarding selling, there’s a “Resale wizard” here:

Cheers. I just need to see if anyone wants the old dongle and licences first, those are rather old versions!

So to confirm… I pay upgrade price to Steinberg to update to Cubase 11. How does that get transferred to my dongle? I guess I input a number? Then I use C11 with dongle until C12 comes out and then I can remove the dongle and carry on?

The best marketing there is. And sorry to say, I hope that it was going to happen. It is the best backup we can get for a rentsomeware.

Then could you please explain this?.

By activating your license:

Cheers!

It’s not the full story. It’s just an answer to your very specific hypothetical question.

Please read the rest of the info, especially the Licensing FAQ if you want to be accurately informed. @dspreadbury has also posted copiously with relevant info.

You’ve just said that Steinberg is going to shut down the current license servers, so the question regarding the new system is not theoretical at all. In the future, when you decide to phase out the new system, how will you address the time-bomb on our perpetual licenses?

This has been answered already several times in this topic or the other one, Concerns about Steinberg Licensing

I raised a similar concern on another thread. Not on the basis that Steinberg will purposely abandon people in years to come for a new licensing system, but on the very possible scenario where Steinberg servers go offline for good and all work from Cubase 12 onwards is inaccessible, by everyone.

This hypothetical has been addressed by the the product teams several times.

It hasn’t, but I understand it’s been taken into account. I suppose we wait and see how it’s addressed.

Correct. And based on nearly 4 decades of history, Steinberg has made sure user licenses are secure, and I, for one, feel that is a solid indication of how they will deal with problems in the future.

Also, note that they have publicly reiterated more than once in the past two days that the contract terms of the license are binding on them.

History does not prove anything about the future. People change, and so does companies, and this is a change.

I don’t doubt for a second Steinberg has the best intentions for the end user. I’m not even entertaining the idea that Steinberg will do us “dirty” in years to come.

My concern is purely related to the fact we must rely on someone else to keep our software running. That’s it.

Myspace was bold and brave as well…

Can you please write something that is good enough to send to a insurance company so that professional users can get a insurance that cover the lifetime work does not get lost when your system fail?

Wow, reading some of the comments, if I were working for Steinberg, I’d scream by now! Why can’t people read the FAQ?! Same on an FB group! It explains it very well, ok, not all the details are fully there for every possible scenario as I guess the system isn’t fully implemented, and no doubt things may be tweaked by the time it’s released with Dorico and then Cubase! You can’t please everyone!
Personally, never had an issue with the dongle, not seen it physically for ages (plugged behind the computer), it just works but fully understand the mobile producers wanting a different solution.
As for the fear of a subscription model, well, if you upgrade every year, think of that as a subscription! I am not a fan of the subscription model and hopefully you won’t change your mind 3-5 years down the line!

I would like to make one request, that the licence check is only done (if there is an Internet connection available and if necessary) when Cubase is launched and not mid session, just in case something goes wrong and corrupts a project. Maybe even some sort of a timer to display licence remaining time before re-activation is required under the Help submenu, maybe even a way to force a re-activation?
Other than that, well done, I look forward to v12.

That is exactly how we plan it to work: it will check your activation status when the application first runs, and it will not check mid-session by itself. If you run Steinberg Activation Manager, say, while Cubase is running, that will also perform a check and refresh when it starts up.
