May I suggest updating the facts page with additions and revisions based on what has been discussed and asked/answered in the forums post announcement so that the same questions/concerns don’t keep getting repeated, and some of us users (and the devs) can simply link people to the updated page.
I have over 1000 plugins that I sorted into sub folders to keep track of them. I hope Cubase 12 is able to update without erasing my plugin folders. I also would like to see an improvement in the load times.
Make an backup of your ‘AppData\Steinberg\Cubase xx_xx’ folder
I think someone from Steinberg already told us that will be possible to open an older project in Cubase 12. You will have a lot of missing plugins, but the project itsef will open. You will not be able to open your older Cubase version without the dongle, but the new Cubase 12 will open the older project.
So it’s mean that there will be no version 11.5?
I dont really care about the dongle, but I am strong against leased software. But I accept the dongle as solution for licensing.
I’ve never read the ULA, but isn’t almost every software leased to the end user?
For Americans ULA maybe. For sure not in sweden, if you put any restriction on a product use the consumer rights law will void everything in the ULA. And I think the swedish consumer rights is based on european union law. If they want any kind of usage limitation they will have to sell only to companies where consumer rights law does not apply… (And they need also then prevent it to be resold at least to consumers)
Plugins that is in VST2/3 format is disconnected from cubase and shared with other VST hosts like cakewalk and Studio-one. They will not be changed, however some might stop working due to incomparability with cubase 12. But there is also a other type of plugins used for hardware extensions and some audio codes etc that need to be “saved” for new a cubase major version.
Perhaps Steinberg should think about offering a service (for a fee) after switching off the license server of the previous system, in order to restore defective USB dongles or to transfer the licenses to another, error-free USB dongle.
So if you are worried that the USB dongle will fail, you should get a new one in good time, which, if necessary, can be sent to the “Steinberg Retro Service”
I’m loving the idea of losing the dongle and it means I’ll now upgrade from Cubase 7.
But before I do, can I get confirmation that the grace period applies to upgrades? If I upgrade now from Cubase 7 to Cubase Pro 11, I’ll also get Cubase Pro 12 when it’s released?
Hlello. I’m a current 10.5 Pro user. If I upgrade now to Cubase 11 will I apply for the grace period for Cubase 12? Thank you.
YES You can
From what has been said previously, If the servers no longer exist to transfer from one dongle to another, or recover from your account to a new dongle then no, that would be the end as things currently stand.
However, when people update/upgrade to C12 they will retain their previous version on a dongle so they can still open C11.5 and downwards. Because of this I think the market will be flooded with legacy Cubase licenses which have already had their updates carried out.
With the sheet number of users out there, you’ll be able to pick up legacy licenses already on the dongle so cheap I think that would be the “real world” solution to your question. Unless Steinberg offer some other alternative. Which I doubt from reading these threads.
Reminds me of my old 2012 Mac Pro in a way, spent thousands on it and always held a decent price… That was until MacOS was no longer supported. After that point I was able to pick up complete systems as spare parts for a matter of hundreds within a year or so.
Just for transparency: The Software End User License Agreement (EULA) can be found here. Creativity First — Our Passion for Music Inspires | Steinberg
All users have to accept these terms when they install our software.
Correct. The next major version of Cubase will be Cubase 12.
I’m not sure how we would be able to repair or replace a defective USB-eLicenser once the eLicenser system has been retired, either, as there will be no way for us to replace or update the licenses on the eLicenser either.
But, as we have said over and over again until we’re quite tired, before we switch off the eLicenser servers, we will have policies in place to protect the licenses of existing users for older products that have not otherwise made the jump to Steinberg Licensing. We can’t say exactly what those policies and procedures will be yet, but please trust that we mean what we say about ensuring this is solved.
Hi Daniel,
In the meantime are there any more bug fixes in the works for 11 ?
Thanks
I don’t think there is an imminent maintenance release planned, but it’s not unusual for there to be one or two more maintenance releases for the last version after the release of the next major version, as you probably know much better than me!
Got it
Thank you!
