Cubase 14 & 15 "stuttering" on Mac

Is anyone experiencing a stuttering on Mac?

I have this on both my previously fine 14Pro and also 15Pro now. I did update to the latest version of 14 yesterday.

Since then, on playback and during general editing there seems to be a pause every second or so. It is extremely distracting as you can imagine.

The audio still runs as it should but watching the timeline it pauses every second or so as described.

Never had this issue till yesterday and my system is pretty decent - Mac M2 Studio with 64GB RAM and Yamaha DM3 desk/interface. OS is now Tahoe but as said until upgrading yesterday C14 ran like a dream.

This is with one drum track and a synth, so not exactly overloading the system.

Hi,

I don’t experience this.

As you describe it (so it affects both your Cubase versions), it sounds like any global component has been updated. This could be HALion Sonic, or EuCon, for example. Anything you can find in Library > Application Support > Steinberg > Components.

Many thanks Martin

All that is in there is -

Cubasisimporter

Omnivocal

SKI

VSTtansit

VSTtransitcore and Wavelabexchange

I am wondering if the Omnivocal might be something here as it is in Beta?

Hi,

Reported to Steinberg.

Thanks Martin

Put a support ticket in too.

Ok, with very quick help from Steinberg Support, the issue seems to be my Templates had open Inspector and Mixer desk windows open behind the main screen.

This can cause this issue and closing the hidden items fixes this. Have saved my Templates without extra hidden windows and all is good.

It will be fixed down the line I am told.

Thank you Martin and Steinberg for hopping on to this one.

Having similar issues on M1 Ultra & M4 Max with Tahoe 26.1

I am going to try the template thing and report back

Hopefully the same issue!

Fingers crossed it gets you working.

I played around with it and the stutter always comes back as soon as you have a window open, e.g. like channel settings per instrument or a separate mixer window. But only if it is covered by the timeline window! Guess I have to make sure my timeline window never covers anything - at least till there’s a software fix :joy:

FIX:
Disable GPU Acceleration

(Did it for me at least)

I’m getting this with both Cubase 13 and Cubase 15. I first noticed it a few days ago before Cubase 15 released. Coincidentally the same day I updated to Tahoe 26.1 ?

So I think it’s possibly related to the Tahoe update more than the Cubase 14/15 updates as it’s also newly present in 13 for me which I haven’t updated in about 6 months?

Thanks to @dreikelvin disable GPU acceleration works for me in both 13 and 15

Don’t know about stuttering, but I’ve observed a considerable delay between using a keyboard shortcut for the 1st time, and consecutive uses. To the point that I wasn’t sure the key press has been registered or not. I need to pay more attention to it.

It’s weird, because this wasn’t happening in 14 not in 15 beta.

Usually I test everything on my laptop before I install it on my main station - but this time the issue was so hidden, I did not notice it first - most often I just launch Cubase/Nuendo and then just load an old project. In addition, if I do something in the channel window, I always close everything before going elsewhere because of that limited screen estate. So that stutter effect occuring is less probable on a laptop.

This is different on my main computer with a 50" screen with multiple windows open.

Funny thing btw, the stutter is a lot “smoother” on M4 (and probably even less noticeable on M5) because how insanely fast these CPU’s are lol

Lesson learned…again? :skull:

This is a possibility. I’m still running 15.7.1 and I don’t have this (Cubase 15 and 13 installed).

I have the same issue, no windows in the background. Disabling GPU accelerations only makes it worse. Started when I “upgraded” to Tahoe 26.1.

I think you are spot on there as it happens on my previously fine 14 too.

Good news is Steinberg are now aware of this

After GPU acceleration checkmark I experienced sluggish behavior due to higher CPU load - even on small to mid-sized projects.

So I made a Template that puts the channel settings window in the top left corner. I’ve got a 50" screen, so I have enough screen estate

That’s what I am going to use (with GPU enabled) for the time being :+1:

Has anyone tried using the channel EQ? Every time I add a point and move it, the choppiness comes back again.

The same issue persisted after updating to Tahoe 26.1.

Closing all background windows resolved the problem. I hope this will be fixed in the next update.

Thank you.

Just got info from support that a maintenance update 15.0.10 is on the way. No clear release date yet.

And no info if they will release an update for Nuendo 14. N15 is around the corner so I am crossing fingers when it’s out, it will be already the patched version.
