Cubase 14 | New Range Tool Issue!

Happy Release day everyone!
Exciting Update we’ve got there.
Just started working with it and unfortunatly beside a lot of useful stuff I found out that editing with the new range tool just got a lot worse.

My problem:
When selecting and deleting (audio) regions with the range tool the range stays selected after deletion.
That then makes applying fades with the range tool a real pain, because you first have to click somewhere else to de-select the range, as the selected range from before is in the way.

Hope that makes sense.
There could be an option the deactivate this behavior, but I wasn’t able to find anything. Maybe it’s a bug.

But a the moment a small dealbreaker for me.

Otherwise great work Team Steinberg!

Not yet unfortunately.
I’m also not sure if it’s a bug or if it’s intended to behave this way. I don’t see what would be the benefit of that, because if you delete the region, the selected region itself becomes useless because theres nothing there anymore.

It’s just weird that such a fundamental handling behavior would suddenly change after being the same for as long as I remember.

Would be great if someone could clarify if it’s a bug or intended this way.

In this youtube video from time stamp 1:05 to 1:41 he does mention how the range tool does now keep its selection, but he does not demonstrate it in the same context of your issue though.

So I believe this is how it’s intended to work now, and that the solution to your issue would require Steinberg to implement a new preference setting for the range tool.

For Example:

Range Tool:
Keep selection after editing operation - Yes / No

I see. Thanks for bringing that up!
That actually makes a lot of sense for this kind of editing.
They then would just have to disable this behaviour for the “delete” action where there’s no benefit to this behaviour (at least none I can think of) to have the best of both worlds.
Would be interesting to hear how other people doing heavy editing think about this.

A macro will solve this but only if you want to assign Range Tool to a key:

Range Selection Tool
Select None

Thank you Humbucker to bring that up, I don’t get why they changed that (for the deletion, I get it for the other cases)
I made this short video to show what we don’t want

That’s exactly it. Thank you for the effort!
Seems pretty easy to fix. I hope this gets enough attention though.

In that case you might wanna add the tag feature request

how we add tag feature request?

Hi,
you can click on the pencil next to your title and add another tag by clicking in the tag field. Unfortunately, you cannot edit your posts at the moment until you have reached the next trust level.
I added the tag “feature request” for you, in case you are wondering how it got there.

EDIT:
@Humbucker I have just realised, that you are the OP. If you wanna remove the tag - you know what to do;)

Just got Cubase 14 and this is the biggest issue I have.

I understand many users have many ways of using this program, but it is very frustrating to break workflows.

They are trying to copy Protools but they are missing a lot of details that make Protools superior in the editing department.

The workaround I have found is this:

Delete what you want, then to apply the fade, instead of selecting from the deleted space and draging towards where you want the fade, you must click from within the region where you want the fade to end (if fade in) or where you want the fade to start (fade out) and then drag towards the deleted space.

It is very counter intuitive and requires more time because you must be precise from the first click.

Might switch back to Cubase 13 deep editing sessions.

Just installed the new C14 14.0.20 Update.
Unfortunately the selection behavior didn’t change so I think it’s intented to behave this way.
I can’t believe that there aren’t more people who are bothered by this.
I tried to get used to it but it feels so weird with the selection staying active after I delete something.
Has anyone maybe found a workaround?

Greetings
Jan

Sure. Hold the Shift key.

To create a new selection range, hold down Shift, and click and drag inside of the selection range.

Please note: If you Shift-click out side of an existing range you will enlarge that range. If you Shift-click inside an exisitng range you will discard the old range and create a new one.
Does that help?

I find this new behaviour really frustrating and is causing me a lot of editing deletion mistakes by the selection still being active after i delete. Has this been tagged as a feature request ? If this was asked for we very much need an option to toggle the behaviour

I couldn’t find a post about this. I would have thought that anyone who edits frequently would run into this issue. By now, I’m kind of used to it, but every time I switch back to Cubase 13, editing instantly feels so much more intuitive.

A simple option to toggle this behavior would be:
“Selection remains after deletion” – On/Off

Easy way to ensure you don’t do accidental deletions – make your delete key a macro of

Delete
Select None
