Cubase 8.5 hang on exit - Anyone else?

Lately I have had some occurences of hang ups on exiting Cubase 8.5. Is this a common issue?

I am on Windows 8.1 on that particular computer.

Anyone?

If you put the words hang on exit into the forum search box you’ll see that it is indeed a common issue.
And that won’t be returning the freeze on exit or crash on exit reports!

Thanks. Ok, I will try a search.

And yes I had to go into the Task Manager to close Cubase?

Is this acknowledged by Steinberg? Rumour of an upgrade fix?

The hang-on-exit issue is a rum do for sure. Some people never experience it, some get it a lot and others, myself included, just now and then and it’s been with us for years. Honestly, I don’t think even Steinberg have any clue what causes it, though for sure, they must be aware of it. It manifests on both Mac an PC. In my 20 years + I’ve never experienced hang-on-exit with any other software. Only Cubase. It is an hang though, not a crash. If you wait long enough Cubase will eventually close.

I’ve seen loads of supposed reasons proposed. Some have suggested that a plug-in is, or could be, the culprit but I don’t think so. For sure it’s never been tied down to any particular plug-in.

It’s just weird.

It is just weird… Some systems just seem to be weird…

With my latest build, I have found that as long as wait for the performance meter to drop to zero after closing a project-and before closing Cubase, I have no issues. Though a few instances that I believe may be Melodyne 4 related, it still gave the ‘there was a problem’ message.

And recently Windows won’t start when I have Machine controller connected. Unplug it from USB port and Windows continues to load.

Friggen computers…

Happened to me every time I closed Cubase 8.5
One of the reasons I reverted back to 8

It happens when we install a new VST badly Fix the VST problem it will be fine or restore Windows on the date everything was working fine… (restore point …you know about it right?)

It happens when Cubase is trying to release the drivers, and if one of them takes too long Cubase will hang. I had the problem some time ago, and at last found a update to a midi driver that fixed the problem. Does not have to be midi related, could be the asio driver or any sort of driver that Cubase tries to close.

could it be a MIDI or ASIO driver even if the windows event log says this?

I’ve reinstalled most everything and it still happens every time I close Cubase

I really think this issue has a lot to do with how cubase interacts with drivers as mentioned by peakae . In my case I have had this as a random issue, over the last few years. I noticed when my midi drivers were not working well ( on boot up midi drivers were not loading, or would load but not work - see my other post on this ) then if cubase hanged on exit, if I unplug my midi hardware cubase would then close.

So I removed my motu midi drivers and stopped using the motu 128, went to an iconnectivity imidi10 and so far no hanging on exit and midi works better than before.

I would try unplugging your midi device on exit ( assuming you have a dedicated midi unit )

Happens here too, no idea why. I thought it was Waves plugins a while ago because with a new Waves update it seemed to go away but it’s back.

this is so frustrating. I just bought Windows 10 and did a clean install of it and Cubase 8.5, Groove Agent, Halion, Massive and SampleTank. Installed all the updates for drivers and Windows stuff. Still crashes when I close Cubase. I reinstalled the C++ 2013 stuff. No difference. I’ll pay somebody to fix this. This is getting old.

This will probably not help much, unless someone’s charting clues… but I have been rejoicing that this problem has gone away finally, for me. I haven’t had it happen since I moved from Windows 7. It used to happen about 85% of the time, I’d guess. Then I changed computers at the same time I went to Windows 8, and the problem vanished completely. It was SO annoying, that even now, when I hit that little X to close, I feel a small surge of excitement.

Same annoying problem here. Since 8.5.20 the “Cubase has stopped working” message on almost every closing of the app.

I get it every time I close also.

I’ve had this issue at various times over the years but not for a while thankfully.

One thing I seem to remember helping was to save your session and then not touch a single thing before quitting Cubase.

I made it go away on my end. It would always hang when I closed the program using the “close button” with the mouse. If I go to the file menu, and use quit, it doesn’t do it anymore.

Yes that does sound familiar from the days when I had this issue.

Hi

same experience here - Quit Cubase and don’t move the mouse and don’t touch the computer keyboard for some time can help to avoid the bluescreen. :astonished:

Cheers

I’ve reloaded my OS and all audio apps and Cubase 8.5. Still crashes with the error below. Tried no C++, newest C++ and everything in between. Still crashes on exit. Same error even when there is no C++ even installed in Programs. So where is this error coming from?? Visual C++ 2013 doens’t change things if its installed or not. :imp:
