Cubase deletes files at random

This has been bugging me for years. I’ll be working on a project and when I open it the next day one or more wav files that I recorded are missing. Deleted so thoroughly that not even data recovery apps can recover them. Sometimes I get lucky by dredging through the edits folder and pulling up an earlier edited version.

Today Cubase said a file was missing when it was actually still there in the audio folder so I had to resort to a load of file moving jiggery-pokery to get it back in the pool. There is no rhyme or reason to it, it’s totally random and frustrating when it happens. Has anyone else experienced anything like this. And, if so, are there any known workarounds / preventative measures?

Cubase does not delete files except by authorization from the user.

You have to understand how Cubase works in regard to storing audio files.

If you want some quality help, give explicit, detailed and clear report, tell us the filepath of your project folder, and the filepath of the file you found in a different folder, to begin with.

Maybe use this as a template, even though this might not be a big report.

When creating a New Project from an existing Project

  • Always use Backup Project As…
  • Never use Save As…

Thank you for your suggestion.

Thank you for your reply. I’ll use that bug report template later on as I’ve got a busy day today.

FWIW, my recording projects are located here: D:\Current Work\Recording\2024\Project Name [in this case Hellas Planitia]
All the usual Audio, Edits and Images folders are sub-folders of the project folder
