Dedicated Topic Sorely Needed for Steinberg Download Assistant

Hello all,

As it stands currently, this seems to be the only place where any threads regarding Steinberg Download Assistant (hereafter referred to as “SDA”) exist. Given the choice of categories, it is also the only logical place to inquire about SDA or bring up issues/suggestions.

There needs to be a SDA Category for several reasons:

  1. Inquiries regarding SDA do not belong in ‘Steinberg Lounge’
  2. Steinberg Lounge is ill-equipped in the sense that it is limited to two tags which rarely, if ever, would apply to inquiries regarding SDA.
  3. A dedicated category could offer the appropriate tags for suggestions, bug submissions, feature requests, etc.
  4. Currently, if one has any issue (or great experience) with SDA, there is no specific place in the Steinberg forum to seek aid or offer knowledge.

To my mind, this is a giant black hole in the otherwise very well-executed forum system here at Steinberg. Few products/companies offer this level of direct access to staff (shout out to SpectraLayers), and fewer still actually pay attention (SL again).

There are specific inquiries which I would like to submit regarding SDA, but there currently exists no place to do so. I hope many others agree with this post and make their voices heard as well.

Thanks.

Edit: Corrected Application Title (thanks Reco29)

Hi,
I agree with you - the lounge area doesn’t offer enough tags. However, you’ll find most of download related topics in the forum part associated with the download itself. I am not sure if a separate category is necessary, though.

One last thing: It’s called Steinberg Download Assistant (SDA). You must have confused it with the Steinberg Library Manager or the (Steinberg) Activation Manager. Believe me - I have been there, too. I have to check each time whether it’s a manager or assistant…

I would support this as well, in fact I think we need a category to cover non-optional components that need to be installed and updated regularly, or at least a read-only change log:

  • Download Assistant
  • MediaBay
  • Library Manager
  • Activation Manager
  • Steinberg built-in ASIO driver

I’ve included the generic ASIO driver as this gets installed every time, regardless of whether it’s needed or wanted, and cannot be prevented. These all make changes to a system, and at least we could get a heads-up before the changes happen. These do go wrong from time to time … most recently the SLM, for example. If we knew when changes are made, it would help troubleshooting and avoid wasting time wondering if it was user error.

Download assistant has gotten quite awful. We def need a catagory for these bits

Is anyone listening?

A place is needed to post bug reports, suggestions, feature requests, et.al. for Steinberg Download Assistant and other Steinberg Utilities.

Hey, you could call it Steinberg Utilities!

Personally, I have several items I wish to bring up/have addressed, and there is ZERO place to post them.

It can’t be all that difficult to add a category to this forum. One that possesses the proper tags.

Are the issues with SDA plentiful enough that it needs a separate forum category to separate them out?

Doubtful. They’re pretty much rinse/repeat. The known fixes work, or they don’t. When they don’t, the work around is to use the downloaded files and not click Install in the SDA… or download the installers directly from {insert webpage containing those}

Am I missing one?

How could anyone possibly know without a place for -not just issues, but- everything to be posted?

Steinberg Utilities

I have even provided the perfect title for the category.

Are there any developers of ‘utilities’ or forum administrators around who are capable of implementing such a thing and/or who are willing to give an official response?

I would tag “issue” or “feature request” but alas… they do not exist in this medium.

For the naysayers, don’t be a “we can’t, because” person, be a “we can, if” person. Would it hurt anything to have a dedicated category? I think, no, it would not. Could it be a possible benefit to many? I think, yes, it could. Would it be major undertaking to implement? Probably not at all, in my estimation.

This is the lounge, a place for off topic discussion. Why not post a request for users to help in one of the product forums? Or… send an email to Support? Or… follow the instructions on the Steinberg website for how to resolve the issue?

If you look at some of the recent issues with MediaBay and the Library Manager, these can affect multiple products and the reported issues are scattered across multiple product forums. If multiple people report similar issues in a dedicated forum section, it might become clearer more quickly whether an issue is related to one of the above-mentioned utilities or whether it’s just user error.

Again, the recent MediaBay/Library Manager is a perfect example of an issue that was only discovered by users, took an amount of time to get acknowledged, more time to get it confirmed, and only then was a patch released with the fix. Up to that point, there were no instructions on the Steinberg website.

In any case, this forum is way quicker than official support, and in my opinion, usually better, at least until recently, with all the AI slop.

Fair enough. But the topic was about the SDA. Rip/replace and/or download product installers manually always works eventually for that… at least the 20 or so times it stopped working for me it has. I’ve never seen anything else fix it. Feels like updates break it more often than repair it.

Thanks, it’s nice to have interested parties participating in the thread. I suppose I could have made the topic clearer. I really appreciate the input from all involved. I would outline all the things I wish to add to a “Steinberg Utilities” category thread, but my hope is that one can be created and I can then post there, where it would make sense. It seems to me that adding a category to Steinberg Forums is likely no more difficult than adding channels in a discord server.

By searching the forums for terms like “SDA” and such.

I’m not opposed to the idea entirely. I’m questioning because, you don’t tend to see many issues which are specific to SDA.

Still hoping to hear from an official regarding this subject.

Thanks

“an official”? Do you mean a Steinberg employee? A forum moderator?

I don’t know what level your expectations are at, but you might want to lower it a little bit  .

There’s a saying… "If you can’t say something nice… "

The term “official” encompasses a large swath of potential personnel. Why do you care what term I choose?

Who are you to dictate to me the limits of my expectations?

There’s much more to say, but I’m following rule one, above.

I’m confused. Did I say something that was not nice?

I was simply asking a question based on the term you used. You do realize this is a user forum and not official Steinberg support, correct?

I’m pretty sure I was not trying to dictate anything. Just making a suggestion based on multiple posts and replies in the forums.

Oh, come on. Let it rip! :winking_face_with_tongue:

No thanks, away, troll.

And there we have it, folks.

Just to add, Steinberg representatives have already acknowledged the shortcomings of the multiple applications and have mentioned that they are working on an “all-in-one” solution. Until that happens, I don’t think a dedicated forum category is needed.

I’m sorry, @PrecisionProductions for eating your mighty troll treats. If you have anything else to contribute that is actually useful, feel free to do so  .

Still hoping to hear from an official regarding this subject.

Thanks
