Do I still need my usb dongle now?

This is for a Steinberg representative…

Hi,

I don’t quite understand what the elicenser cancellation means for me regarding the usb dongle. Is it still needed? Or can I remove it from my system?

I am a registered user of Cubase 14 Pro, Wavelab 12 Pro, and Spectralayers 11 Pro.

(I mistakenly deleted this topic once I had created it, so there is a locked one with a similar title floating around. Sorry about that. An undo delete feature would be cool, btw.)

All the best,

Magnus

You don’t need it for the programs you mentioned. I only use mine still because I have virtual guitar 2. I gave t used it in ages so I may ditch mine also.

Thank you so much for confirming this.

So, the USB dongle is not needed anymore. Follow-up question: Can I also uninstall the eLicenser Control app from Win 10? Or is this still needed?

Best,

Magnus

No need for it since the old licenses are no longer required. So, yes, you might as well deinstall it.

Don’t do that. First of all the Control Center will automatically come back every time you launch the Download Assistant and second it is still linked in some way in the software.

It is a tiny utility that does no harm at all on your system. Just ignore it and that’s it. Steinberg will do something here when the time of the eLicenser shutdown comes, so for now just ignore it.

Thanks, great. I will remove the dongle and uninstall the elicenser control app.

Hi Magnus,
@JuergenP expertise supercedes mine in this department, so please follow his advice!

I thought that the eLCC would be removed completly without any traces left. Comparable to a fresh install of C14 on a new system where the eLCC is not needed in the first place. This is not the case, @JuergenP ? As I said, I’m with you since you are more knwledgeable with installations than me

If you want to test if everything works fine without the dongle you can simply unplug it. Start all the Steinberg products one after the other - if one of them still requires the dongle it will let you know immediately.

I guess this will be the case later next year, after the shutdown. At the moment it is still linked and there might be some error when it is removed and you launch the Activation Manager.

There is a way of detaching them, but that requires a manual change in a configuration file. It is explained here.

Ooops, saw this too late. I will run the Download Assistant then, to have the control center reinstalled.

But all my Steinberg apps started up fine without it.

Magnus

Of course they will do, when you do not have any legacy eLicenser based products everything will just work.

It is just a bit annoying that every time you start the Download Assistant, it will reinstall the eLCC and you need to deinstall it again. So instead of getting in a loop of install/deinstall, ignore it and you are good.

Sound advice! I thank you for it. I will wait for Steinberg to fix this before I uninstall the app.

Nice, though, to finally remove the dongle.

All the best,

Magnus

Thanks for the link, @JuergenP ! So, the Activation Manager is the trouble maker - didn’t have that one on my screen since all licences Magnus mentioned are running on the new licensing system.
The benefits of a forum like this - you’ll always learn something new :+1:
@Magnus_N Hope I didn’t cause too much trouble!

No, no problems at all. I ran the Download Assistant and the control center app reinstalled.

And technically, you were correct, it seems. My Steinberg products opened as they should without the app. But as Juergen points out, running the Download Assistant will reinstall the app.

All the best,

Magnus
