Dorico 5 with Noteperformer?

After purchasing Dorico 5 I wonder what the consequences are in combination with Noteperformer: Should I upgrade to NP 4 in order to benefit from the new Halion sound libraries? Which settings do I have to change compared to Dorico 4 with NP 3.3.2?
I do not aim at sophisticated playback mockups, I just want an overall playback option without any fuzzing, but I would like to profit from the new features.

There’s not really any difference between using NP3 or NP4 with Dorico 4 or Dorico 5 if you’re just using NotePerformer’s built-in sounds. You can just carry on using NotePerformer exactly as before.

Thank you for your quick response. Do I then have any benefits from the new Dorico Halion libraries?

Not if you’re playing back through NotePerformer, no. But there aren’t any new HALion sounds included with Dorico 5 at this stage: just some new drum kit sounds via Groove Agent SE.

Thank you!

Although, NotePerformer don’t agree to play al and dal niente (hairpin with zero points: o< mf >o =just silence) in Dorico 5 as he was able to perform in previous Dorico 4 version. Any ideas whay?

Since upgrading from Dorico 4 to 5, Noteperformer doesn’t make any sound. On my Track Inspector, Noteperformer now is labelled “!! Noteperformer !!” Please help!

If !!Noteperformer!! appears (or, FWIW any VSTi appears as !!VSTi!!) it means Dorico tries to find NotePerformer but does not find it. I’d try reinstalling it (it’s harmless and doesn’t take that much space to download again)

I’m assuming it’s NotePerfomer4 you’ve upgraded to? if you’re still on NP3, that’s vst2 only so needs to be in your white list of allowed vst’s and it’s possible the Preferences may not have ben imported from D4 so NP is blacklisted.

No, I am on NP 3 without anything else. I am a complete newbie concerning playback and I have no idea about VST etc. Could you perhaps give me a hint how to get some basic information about this area?
I am not interested in plunging deeply into virtual playback, but I would like to take profit of the equipment provided with Dorico 5.
Thank you!

If you’re happy with the sounds you’re getting out of NotePerformer 3, there’s really nothing more to do. NP4 only sounds “better” if you’re willing and able to invest in high-end sample libraries costing hundreds of dollars, and if your computer is sufficiently powerful to run them in the way that NotePerformer handles them (which typically involves running many more instances of the sounds than you would normally use in Dorico if you use them directly, further increasing the demands on your system).

So, to reiterate, if you’re not interested in tinkering with virtual instruments, or if you have neither the time, nor the money, nor the sufficiently powerful computer to consider using NP4 in conjunction with a high-end sample library, you can very well continue just as you are.

I would have upgraded to NP4 (free) even if I were not using the outside sound sets just to stay current and take advantage of any (even small) improvements Arne might have added to the software.

Thank you very much for your explanation!

And if you’re on Mac, upgrading to NotePerformer 4 allows you to run Dorico natively on Apple Silicon rather than via Rosetta.

Two questions:

  1. Having updated to NP4, do I now need to reconfigure my MacBook Pro to run Dorico 5 on Apple Silicon instead of Rosetta, or does it do that automatically?
  2. Can I run NP4 and Groove Agent SE in the same project? Despite upgrading to Dorico 5, when I load up basic drum set, it still comes through NP4. I’d like the drums to be set to Groove Agent SE and everything else set to NP4. Can someone tell me how to set this up please?
    THANK YOU SO MUCH!

If you previously set Dorico to run using Rosetta, you’ll need to manually change that: select the Dorico application icon in Applications, type Command+I to open the Get Info window, and make sure Open using Rosetta is switched off.

You can use Groove Agent SE with NotePerformer, but you’ll need to manually set it up as a new playback template.

Sorry to revive, I’m having the same problem with Note Performer 3. Attached is my playback page. Note the !! issue.

I have re-installed NP 3 to no avail. It should be noted I also have Finale on the same computer and NP runs just fine. The native Dorico playback temps work fine. The device setup is in order. Thanks!

Re-applying the playback template did not help?

Thanks Marc, no. In fact you will notice that there are no faders for the full quartet. They appear using all other playback temps but disappear for Note Performer 3.

NotePerformer uses its own mixer. If you open NotePerformer by clicking the “e” button next to the port and channel, it should open up.
That NP does this can be a bit of a pain if you’re also using other VSTs, but it’s just the way NP does things.
