Dorico cannot connect to the audio engine. The application will now quit

Hello, Finale to Dorico user here. I am getting the above error message for Mac on launch. I tried temporarily renaming both the VST and VST3 directory in Plugins but that didn’t help. I am attaching the Diagnostics Report from my machine. Any help would be appreciated.

Dorico has two main processes: the main Dorico.app and “VST Audio Engine”. If the app crashes, then the Audio Engine can be left hanging.

You need to launch macOS’s Activity Monitor, and Quit the VST Audio Engine process. Then you should be able to launch Dorico again. Or you could just restart the Mac.

I’d put the VST folders back, too!

Thanks for the reply. I haven’t successfully launched Dorico yet so the VST Audio Engine hasn’t launched. I tried searching it in Activity Monitor but it doesn’t seem to be running.

Hmm. Yes, the Audio Engine seems to be crashing at launch for some reason.

I’m sure a Dorico staff member will be along soon to diagnose it.

Also, you’re running MacOS 14.1.1. That shouldn’t matter, but it’s best to update to the latest version of Sonoma (particularly before the next OS comes along).

I’m not a Mac user, but I remember that Sonoma 14.1 was broken when it arrived from Apple. There were lots of issues introduced by Apple, that are fixed in Sonoma 14.5.

Welcome to the forum, @jhy. Can you check that you have the latest version of Groove Agent SE installed on your computer? It looks like it’s Groove Agent SE that’s causing the crash, and I wonder whether you might have an older version lurking around.

You can find the latest version in Steinberg Download Assistant, or here:

Thanks that fixed it. I don’t recall having installed Groove Agent before, but installing it from scratch allowed Dorico to load.

Then we can make a suggestion to the devs:

Let Dorico main app automatically kill existing VSTAudioEngine processes on app initialization before running VSTAudioEngine.

Unless you have Cubase open at the same time.

Hello,
Dorico Diagnostics.zip (329.9 KB)

I’m also a finale to dorico migrant and I’ve got the same problem, but installing Groove Agent SE didn’t help.

I’m on Big Sur 11.7.10. Restarting the computer didn’t help. I’m attaching the diagnostics files.

Welcome to the forum, @j.sotomski. In your case, it looks to be an older version of HALion Sonic SE that is the troublemaker. Please try installing HALion Sonic 7, which should replace HALion Sonic SE, and you should have more luck.

Hi @dspreadbury,

I’ve been also mailing with Mr. Ulf Stoermer, I had to delete old Halion files from Library folder and then it worked.

Thank you for your help!

Having the same issue and none of these solutions are working…or I’m doing it wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello all.

I am another Finale crossgrader with exactly the same issue. I performed the default install on 2 computers, using the Steinberg Download Assistant. On my laptop it’s OK, but my Mac mini cannot connect to Audio Engine.

I am attaching the diagnostics report.

Thanks for the forum!

Welcome to the forum @chapman.welch and @ma77yd07ca1m .

First I answer Chapman: Your logfiles of the audio engine show that the audio engine starts the plug-in scanning but then suddenly the logfile breaks off as if the audio engine process crashes. On the other hand, the diagnostics contain no crash files, which makes the whole thing a bit awkward.
First thing I’d like you to check is: Go to the directory //Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Components and make a file listing of items that you can find there. If there is a HALion Sonic SE.vst3 bundle, please get the version number of it. If it says something like version 2.0 then delete that bundle and try again starting Dorico.

Now for @ma77yd07ca1m: Your logfiles of the audio engine are all completely empty, which means the audio engine process does not run at all, it not even starts the most basic initializations. Very strange.
Can you please tell me what happens when you right click on the Dorico.app and choose Show Package Content and continue navigating to Contents/Applications, there should be the item VSTAudioEngine5.app. If you double click it, does a splash screen appear of the VSTAudioEngine?
Additionally, just like I explained to Chapman above, have a look for that Components folder and tell me the file listing of that folder.

Thanks

Hi Ulf,

Just purchased Dorico 5.
Having the same issue. i have reinstalled GA5 SE and later removed the file from components. I am attaching what is in it now plus the Diagnostics. I also run the VST AudioEngine5. It is still on screen.

Thanks!

Also have this in Terminal

Hi, the vsttransit bundles are also well known for making trouble. Please move them temporarily to the Desktop and then start up Dorico.
(But first need to kill the audio engine process via Activity Monitor or Terminal)

Yes, that worked! I was able to launch.
On first screen I unticked use of GA SE5 just in case.
Put the vsttansit bundles back in components. I don’t know if I need them but still working.
Though the audio engine still requires 20sec to launch. I don’t know if that is normal.

Thank you for your help Ulf!

Hello Ulf. Thank you for your quick reply. And hello @chapman.welch.

I do get a splash screen (Version 5.6.41 (Intel). As I write this, it is still “Initializing:Finish scanning VST3 Plugins…”

I do have a small collection of VST3s, but all my other audio apps scan them in less than a minute. This app appears to be stuck. It’s been at least 10 minutes.

In the Components folder are only 2 items:
KOMPLETE KONTROL AM-Series.bundle

KOMPLETE KONTROL S-Series.bundle

Both are version 1.0.0 (I am surprised to find these Native Instruments components here.)
