Welcome to the forum, @Frank_Bozak and @murdocc_2015.

Frank, it looks as if the audio engine is stalling altogether when it first starts up. Can you try a reboot to make sure you’re starting from a clean slate, and then see if that helps at all? If not, please run Activity Monitor and then start Dorico: do you see the VST Audio Engine process appear in the list? Does it stay there, or does it appear and then disappear again? If it stays there, please try creating a Spindump from the menu in the Activity Monitor toolbar, then zip up and attach the resulting file.

Jan, can you provide a bit more information about what you are actually experiencing?

Thanks Daniel.

I’ll need to pass this on to @Ulf to see if he has any thoughts about this, when he gets a chance. So far as I can tell, Dorico is starting up normally and waiting for the audio engine to be initialised, but I can’t read the runes of the audio engine itself well, so we need a more expert pair of eyes.

Thank you Daniel.

I am blown away by your quick response!!

Looking forward to getting started with Dorico, I am considering Finale’s end to be a blessing in disguise.

Thank you,

Frank Bozak

It looks like everything is in order now. Dorico had opened!

The last time I used Finale was in mid July, it turns out my iconnectivity XL mio had an update July 24. There was also some drivers still hanging around from my older MOTU midi express, so I deleted those files as well.

Thanks again,

Frank

Thanks for your fast replay.
I start up Dorico and shortly after that Dorico tells me that it is waiting to connecting with the audio engine and after about 4 minutes and a couple of messages where i can chose to continue waiting or close Dorico, I get a message that says that Dorico will close down since it cant connect to the audio engine. Thats it. Jan

I’m glad you’re up and running now, Frank. I’ll let Ulf know that he doesn’t need to examine your spindump – that will be a relief for him. If you have any new problems with Dorico, please feel free to create a new thread.

Jan, when Dorico shuts down, it should be creating a zip file called Dorico Diagnostics.zip on your Desktop. Can you attach it here?

Hi, here it is…
Jan

Jan, every VST plug-in on your system is being refused, which suggests that the VST scanning process is failing.

The first thing to check is that if you have an old version of HALion Sonic SE or Groove Agent SE installed, which would have come from older versions of Steinberg products, try removing them, or at least installing the latets versions of these plug-ins via Steinberg Download Assistant.

The next thing to check is whether you have any unusual file paths for your plug-ins: are you using shortcuts or symbolic links to have your plug-ins located on another drive?

I dont have any versions of HALlion or Groove Agent installed. I have my VSTs installed on an external drive but as far as I know I am not using any shortcuts or symbolic links. The path looks like this: G:\Live Library\VST pluggar.

Hi @murdocc_2015 , the WaveShell plug-in is famous for causing trouble in Dorico’s audio engine. When it is missing a license, it pops up an alert window, but that alert does not get into the foreground and stays behind the Dorico window waiting for a user prompt. Because of this the audio engine comes to a standstill. So please launch Dorico again and watch out for hidden alert boxes and see what happens if you click them away.

I’ve had a crash when an external audio card is connected through the hub. (as an option, try running without external sources and see how it behaves. (just as an idea ;-), may the Dorico workers forgive me for interfering) ;-))

Ok, I will try that tomorrow. Jan

Hi Ulf, I did close the Dorico window and though the start up continued i couldnt see any alerts of any kind and the process went on as I described earlier i got the question to wait longer or Terminate Dorico and after 4 minutes Dorico closed down. And I did reopen Dorico again but the same thing happened again. I attach the last Diagnostic file. Jan

Hi @murdocc_2015 , then let’s try something else.
Please go to C:/Program Files/Common Files and there temporarily rename the folders VST, VST3 and Steinberg/Components to something else, e.g. _VST, _VST3 and Steinberg/_Components
With that change in place and when starting up Dorico, how does it then behave?

Hi Ulf, I tried what you suggested but I couldnt find any Steinberg folder in the Common Files folder, besides my Windows 11 dont have a Program Files folder, which I found in the Program (x86) folder. I changed the names of the VST 2 and 3 folders to what you suggested. So I might have done this wrong. Anyway I got the same result as before, Dorico closed down after about 4 minutes without beeing able to connect to the audio engine. No alerts of any kind just the option to wait longer or Terminate. In the Program folder I found a Steinberg folder with a folder named Shared Components, containing 2 dll files, should I rename this one too ? I didnt even find it earlier so I havent tried renaming it yet but I want to check it with you before I try it. Jan

Sorry, I forgot this file.
