I’ve discovered a strange behaviour when trying to add a modifier, such as espress. or dolce, following a dynamic: if the dynamic is quiet, mp or below, there is a space after the dynamic. If it is mf or above, there is no space added, and it really doesn’t look good (pics below). This seems like a bug to me. Is this a known issue, or something that is going to be fixed? I believe that I am typing the correct directions into the popover: “f espress.” and “mp espress.” complete with the space in between the dynamics. I even tried double spaces for the louder dynamics and it had no effect.
I know that after I’ve created the marking, I can use the Properties panel to add in a space, but that seems like unnecessary work.
This has indeed been mentioned before, and the reason behind it is that the music font makers are not adhering to the official SMuFL specifications:
Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to set this spacing globally and manually, so you will have to enter an extra space in the beginning of every suffix field for the dynamic markings ending with f.
Since this issue has to do with dynamics ending with f, adding some kind of blank glyph to the end of the music symbols themselves could fix the problem, and thus avoid having to repeatedly change things in the Properties panel.
If you go to Library>Music Symbols… and select one of the dynamics, you can edit their appearance, or add additional glyphs to them. I chose to add the “null” notehead from Finale Maestro (since I’m using that font, but I see Bravura and others have the null notehead as well), whose Unicode is U+E0A5, after the f glyph with an X offset of 3. This actually seems to work pretty well and gives me a result I can live with. See pictures of the results below.
That’s true. Unfortunately, this workaround isn’t ideal, because I found out it messes up the spacing of combined dynamics, like mfp for example. Maybe at some point I’ll mess with it more and see if I can find settings that eliminate that issue.
