Ear buds

I would like to use my Air Pods in Dorico so I don’t annoy my wife. They work in every application, including Finale, but not in Dorico. In Device Setup the only output that shows is Built in Audio 1 and 2. What am I missing?

Are you sure they are paired with your Mac?
Because if they are, then they normally turn up in the driver list in the Device Setup dialog.

Please also do Help > Create Diagnostics Report and post here the corresponding zip file. Thanks

Are you quitting Dorico before connecting your AirPods?

If you don’t want to quit it, you need to create an aggregate audio device.

Thanks all. Yes, the Air Pods are properly paired to the computer. Quitting before connecting the Air Pods didn’t help, but I can make do with wired headphones.

What does the dialog evoked by clicking Device Control Panel in the Device Setup display? I only know how Windows handles it, but I suppose that there might be such a button on macOS as well.

AirBuddy is a useful app for macOS which might help you here, Bill.

Klavierpunk,

Device Control Panel shows this.

What would happen if you uncheck Automatically configure devices? EDIT: And has this screenshot been taken with your AirPods connected?

Unchecking automatically configure didn’t help, and yes, screenshot is with AirPods working.

Thanks to all. I’m going to stop worrying about this. Before long we will be recovered from The Great Plumbing Disaster of '25 and I will be back in my studio, where it is not an issue.

Thanks again.

I see. Wired headphones do indeed look like your best option as of now. But do feel free to export a diagnostics report and upload it here, the whole Dorico team is very active here and especially @Ulf has proven to look at every single diagnostics report uploaded here (at least as far as I can remember).

Apart from that, I have read about similar occasions of Core Audio not recognising AirPods only for particular applications, but I cannot provide any first hand experience nor allow myself any verdict, as I have never worked with macOS (and most probably never will).

Or hang on @billstevns , what is the setting of your earbud’s sample rate? If it is less or equals 16kHz, then it won’t work either, because it is lower than the audio engine actually allows it
If that is the case, also the buds won’t appear in the drive section again of the DDevice.

I used this tip from some other post/forum when having the same problem with my wireless headphones:

  1. connect bluetooth heatphones to Mac
  2. open Audio MIDI Setup app
  3. from [+] sign bottom left create new Multi-Output Device
  4. check BT Headphones right side on the list of available output devices
    — Audio Midi Setup can be closed now
  5. Open Dorico and selct the newly created device as audio output

Hi @Thor_Hauknes , right, that is also a good advice.

Thor’s solution worked! Thank you. That solution is now added to my permanent collection. Thanks to all who chimed in here, and to all on this forum who are so patient and helpful with Finale orphans.

I was just on tour and had only my AirPods Pro 2 headphones with me.
I am nowadays using Loopback app from Rogue Amoeba.

I am not hijacking Dorico’s audio but I have created a virtual stereo audio bus called “Dorico” (see on the left side).
Second from left is “sources” area and it has pass-thru enabled.
Then the next area “Output channels” is what I am using to get audio in my DAW. In my 2 fixed locations I am using Daw to route audio further. This is because I have Focusrite Clarett+ with one output pair routed to speakers and the second one to my headphone amp.
On travels, however, I am not starting DAW at all. In the rightmost area “Monitors” you can see MBP speakers and “pots” (those are my Airpods). Because I am currently back home you can see them both turned off.

This setup involves no mingling with audio output settings in Dorico because the Loopback’s virtual bus called “Dorico” is always present. Also, disconnecting Airpods never causes any issues with Dorico because Dorico has no direct connection to BT headphones (which is a good thing).

Loopback is not cheap but in case you work as a professional you should buy the right tools. This does not apply only to music.
