I want to change a quarter note to a quarter rest. How?

Select the note and hit Delete.

Yes I tried that. The following notes are automatically moved backward to “fill” the space. In this measure, I have a half note, quarter note, quarter note. I need a half note, a quarter rest, and a quarter note. That is what I am unable to achieve. Deleting the note on the third beat does delete the note, but no REST appears. the succeeding notes are all jacked backward one full beat. Hope that is clear.

It sounds like you have Insert mode turned on - check the left panel.

OK! My version calls the button “Start Note Input“ - I guess that is the one you are referring to, because I de-selected that button and selected the “Select” Button, and got the behavior I was hoping for. Thanks a million for the quick response so late at night!

Pressing I will turn it off or on. Generally off is what you want.

Thanks for the graphic and detail. I’m not sure which button caused the issue, but I will be more watchful in the future. I am 72 and learning my 4th music notation software. (the other 3 went out of business over the years). So maybe this is just the “old dog - new tricks” thing … or I am just tired. Either way, I really appreciated the quick help.
