I’m considering upgrading to GA6. I have the full version of GA4 but the license is on a USB dongle. Questions:
Will I still be able to use the GA4 sound library under GA6?
I’m assuming the new license will be backward compatible and I will no longer need the dongle (I have 2 PC’s and would like to move the dongle back to my old PC with an older version of Cubase that can still run VST2’s)?
Not sure how to get the GA4 sound library onto the new PC – path/file/directory structure is very convoluted. Would I be able to re-download from Steinberg onto the new PC?
I saw something that said once you save a GA4 kt into GA6, you can no longer use that kit in GA4 – sounds a little scary…or do you just not save the kits?
Also, I’m assuming GA6 can read GA5E & GA6E kits?
Simply, Yes.
This is ambiguous. You can run GA4 still, as long as a dongle (with the associated software) is plugged in. You can’t have more than 1 version of GA on a single machine/login. The licence for GA6 is not “backwards compatible”. It allows you to run any already purchased GA that has been switched to the new licencing system.
Organisation is the key here. When I got my PC I just took out the old M2 drive which had all my sample libraries, and put it in the new.
But yes, you can download the libraries again, via the Download Assistant. Some items on the web site, but some you must use the SDA.
Since you can only have 1 version of GA on your machine, this really shouldn’t be an issue.
Personally, I don’t save Kits. Every project has a differently tweaked Kit to suit the music.
Yes.
Whew!
Thanks for the reply – RE: the “ambiguous” question – if I install GA6 on my new PC (with “non-dongle” SB licensing), will I be able to:
-
Install the GA4 sound library on the new PC running Cubase 15 WITHOUT THE DONGLE (because now GA4 license should be “covered” by GA6 license), and…
-
Move the dongle back to old PC so I can continue to use GA4 on the old machine running Cubase 7.5 (allowing me to continue to use my extensive VST2 collection)
Right.
Well, the libraries that come with GA (Rock Kit, Studio Kit, &tc) will work, I’ve just tried it on my PC.
But!
Other libraries (Simon Phillips, for example) still need either to have the dongle, OR have their licences switched to the new system.
