Gain of individual VCAs totally off after reopening Project

Hello fellow Cubase Users,

the past days I’ve been working on a Mix in Dolby Atmos for which I used VCAs (which I usually don’t do). I then rendered the track via Export → 7.1.4. Bus → Split Channels. After listening back to the track in another cubase project I wanted to do minor adjustments, so I reopened the Project the mix was made in. The gain for the Piano VCA was totally off (Numbers stayed the same, but perceived Loudness was arround 6-12dB louder than in the mix I’ve bounced. After adjusting it back this happened again and again, everytime I reopened the project, but with different VCAs and different alterations (Sometimes arround -10dB, sometimes -6dB, sometime +6dB. It seems pretty random and is fairly frustrating to find the exact same settings that you once already had.

I don’t know if it is a Problem with the VCAs, the single tracks or with Atmos (or with me to be fair).

Has anyone encountered something like this before?

Greetings,
Alan

Hi Alan! Welcome to the forums!

Have a look at this thread. Is this what you’re experiencing? If yes, it’s a quirk with the automation. The workaround is to write volume automation (even just 1 node at the very start will do) for the tracks connected to the VCA fader(s).

Thank you! I think this is exactly what I’m experiencing. To be honest I’m very disappointed in Steinberg, since this seems to be going on since Cubase 8 and seems like a big basic issue which you would never like to encounter when mixing…
I’ll try the node solution! Thank you!
