I wonder if anyone could recommend some good virtual instrument libraries for clarinets, beyond what HALion already allows?
The reason I’m asking is because while HALion sounds nice, it has the following problems:
- limited upper range for both clarinet (only to concert-pitch high F, or Bb high G) and bass clarinet (only to concert-pitch high C, or written high D), when both are capable of going much higher (and according to an earlier forum thread on clarinet range this is unlikely to change).
- limited lower range for A clarinet: HALion only goes down to concert-pitch low D, which means the A clarinet lacks its written low E (lowest note on standard instrument). That’s before we get into the basset clarinet, which goes down to written low C.
- it’s missing instruments other than clarinet and bass clarinet: others (e.g. Eb clarinet, basset horn, alto clarinet, contra-alto and contrabass clarinets) are simulated by using the clarinet or bass clarinet library sounds, meaning not only that the sounds aren’t right but that they are missing large portions of their range
Can anyone recommend a good virtual instrument that supports a wider subset of the clarinet family, covering a wider part of their range, and that will play nice with Dorico?
Even better if said library covers other (wood)wind families similarly well, but it’s also fine if I need several different libraries to cover the whole clarinet family well.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice.
