HELP. Cubase souless and soundless and seemingly no way out

My first post and it’s a scream for help. I did a audio export to another computer and when I went back to my original project, all the tracks were soundless except for a couple which played only half the notes (digital- drums, keys). I do not use MIDI connections. Most of my other projects are sound-less. I have gone over everything, studio setup, interface setup, buffers, mute, solos, tempo, musical time-not musical time… Have reloaded in safe mode with preferences off and no change. Should I do a complete uninstall and reinstall – including registry entries from Cubase ( Wavelab and Spectral Layers seem to work just fine, audio on the computer is fine. Other DAWs work just fine. Tracks work fine outside of Cubase.

There is no sound on any of the meters, except for the weirdly selected tracks

Cubase 12, 13 , 14 – only work in 13.0.55 (so far)

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor 4.20 GHz

64 GB WIN11

Good start listing your PC.

What brand/kind of audio interface are you using? And how is it connected to your PC?

If Safe Mode did not work for you, and you have turned off 3rd party, plus turn of user preferences, you may consider “trashing preferences.” Google that for instructions. Do not do that before saving any important preferences somewhere else on your PC.

Is it just the one project that’s messed-up, or every project?

Have you rebooted your machine?

You saying everything works fine in 13.0.55–and the problem is with all the other versions?

All of the projects are OK when I transfer them to another computer. rebooted many times. no cubase versions are working but wavelab and spectral layers and other DAWs work fine

focusrite 8i6 connected directly usb-c

I’m wondering if I should do a complete uninstall of the DAW , removing the specific registry entries and re install???

Cubase creates only a very minimalistic set of registry entries. I wouldn’t focus on that.
Creating a fresh set of preference files is much more promising.

I did a reload with no preferences (ctrl/Alt?Shft) other than factory and nothing changed

Create a new profile to renew all preferences.

On a good day I would say this is the work of a nasty virus, but this machine never goes on to untrusted sites. I SHOULD ALSO MENTION I AM A NEWBI. I have only been using Cubase of about 10 months. I used SONAR platinum and Studio Pro and Ableton. Sonar I used for more than a decade before the Gibson debacle

Unless your disk or filesystem has somehow corrupted files from the Cubase install, a un/reinstall probably probably won’t solve much. cubase’s configuration is not in the registry, but under %APPDATA%\Steinberg\Cubase XY. You can try moving those folders (all of them) to a safe place and then Cubase will recreate it from scratch.

What if you create a fresh project, add just one track with an audio file, does that work? If yes, maybe add a midi track with say Halion Sonic or Retrologue.

Sometimes a third party plugin that thinks it is not correctly authorized can block all sound going through it. Do you see anything on the channel meters in Cubase? If yes, and it stops somewhere, it is most likely that. If the meters don’t shoe at all, it is something with the ASIO driver or audio setup

Nothing on the Control meters except in a few cases a strange selection of tracks that are software based (drums, keyboards) but only half of the inputted sounds are played at normal tempo.

This issue only affects Cubase. I use three other DAWs and they all work fine. Audio editing programs like Wave Pro and Melodyne all work fine. Audio on the computer works just fine.I tried to record, but no input, transferred basic audio files to a new projects, nothing.

I did a re-install (without uninstalling the original program) but it changed nothing.

What fese said. New empty project, 1 track to start. If that works then issue is in the problem project, possible import those tracks into new project.

I had to switch from ur44 to SSL 12.

While all of the original projects are okay ( I backed them up and tested on another system). Did a complete uninstall and reinstall with direction from Steinberg. All of the audio is silent. Some digital tracks (drums, keys) will play back but only half the notes play at half the speed. The tempo cannot be changed. You can insert new numbers, but it remains the same.

Yes, you keep repeating all that, but have you actually tried what we suggested? (trying new fresh projects to exclude it is a project problem, check for faulty plugins, move the configurations folders and start from fresh…).

Diagnosing computer problems remotely is difficult anyway, but we only can try to make suggestions bases on systematic troubleshooting best practices, but if you don’t try that and report back (precisely, what you did and what the result was), there is no helping you.

So, despite this being very unlikely the culprit in your case, here is what happened to me a couple of years ago: After assembling a new small computer and after I installing Cubase 12 (or 13) everything went pretty fine at first. But suddenly, the most ridiculous errors started to appear, including the abiility to get sound from the DAW, despite Windows itself could play its system sounds and despite the media player was able to output audio files.

Long story short: It turned out that I myself corrupted my Windows 11 installation after doing an 1:1 backup of the system drive. It has something to do woth encryption / BitLocker and what not, and having the system drive and the backup drive even for a short time inside the same computer was enough to compromise the entire system as if it had been hacked and infested by computer viruses.

SO, it all ended with me having to put a fresh new drive into the PC, install Windows 11 and all other software, including Cubase, from scratch. That actually solved the problem but cost me meny weeks of work and headache and a few hundred dollars on new SSDs.

I have tried re-recording in Cubase and NO it doesn’t do anything more than what mentioned p[reviously

So here is a crossDAW response to how they are acting now. On this computer I have four DAWs. I don’t use Ableton much. Along with Cubase 12-13-14, I use Sonar Platinum, cuz it’s old and loads fast for notebooking ideas quickly. I also use Studio One. It’s very guitar friendly ( it’s owned by Fender). On each one I tried to record one simple audio track and one simple instrument track (i don’t use a lot of MIDI) In Sonar everything worked as per usual. No problems at all. In Studio One There was some latency issues with the audio track, but that was fixed with buffers. Otherwise worked as it’s expected. In Cubase: the metronome doesn’t make any sound at all, though the settings are unchanged. I try to record audio but it stalls and then says"too many tracks recording" It does nothing. On the instrument track, it does record at the tempo I play, but at first the sound is harsh muted and muted but less so. At first it only seemed to record the attack on the note and then the whole note but very muffled.

This is after a complete uninstall and reinstall.of Cubase

I should also mention, as I wasn’t sure about this, but it seems like a lot of random files have been distributed to inappropriate locations like Wave files to the desktop or audio files removed from the containing folder (like the folder was deleted but not the content.

Also on the export I did before this all happened, it came out just fine , but I did not freeze my instrument tracks before exporting (if this is important).

If I need to go total nuclear, should I 1) wipe this computer or buy new (thinking about licensing) Are there any companies that would give me a hassle about a reinstall of software on a new machine? I have another copy of Cubase and Melodyne on another computer set up for vocals. So a new computer would be a third install, but would a re-formatted SSD and new Windows install create a new “machine” also? Steinberg (Cubase, Wavelab…a lot of it), Melodyne, NI ( Kontakt. Isotope Suite) UVI and Falcon, Arturia, and a vast smattering of everything from U-he synths or Soundpaint, to obscure decentsampler, and a very large collection of sound tools (compressors, modulators,…from a manner of manufacturers) some purchased directly and some purchased through a third party like Plug-in Alliance

OK, so here is what I would do if I had this problem:
I would first deactivate all Steinberg licences tied to this computer (You might have to do that with plenty of your plugins as well, I guess). Then of course, backup all your user data amd files.
Then, I would wipe the SSD completely (full reformat) and then do a fresh install of Windows, followed by a fresh install oof audio devicie drivers, followed by a fresh install of Cubase.

Before installing ANY further plugins and virtual instruments, I would first try “virgin” Cubase using only its internal plugins: Does it record and play audio? Can you use internal steinberg VIs and VST Effects?

Then I would install one third party VST at a time, always checking if it works properly in Cubase.

You should also have in mind to keep your system drive half empty - if you have your C:-drive like 95% filled, this will accelerate drive aging and data corruption.

Maybe you should also run an SSD-diagnostic tool first before doing the all the formatting and re-installing.

I mean, you have so many different DAWs, and tons of Plugins and instruments, I wouldn’t be surprised if that all got too much for the system…

A friend came by and ran a program and discovered a TROJAN. I would suggest a Trojan worm cuz, even though we killed it at its source, it still crawls about causing havoc and destruction. Consequently, I have talked to my local computer. guys and we are rebuilding a new AMD (9950) monster. A couple of “K” down the drain. However, it’s my passion. However in all of this I must tell you my extreme disappointment. While Forum members were quick to help, the assigned support staff at Yamaha Canada ( yep I am one those, eh) were not only late to the game but entirely offensive. I have been a Steinberg customer for about 10 months. In that time I have spent a at least a couple of thousand dollars on Steinberg software (Cubase, Wave Pro, HALion, etc..) and the response from Yamaha Canada was. at first, “we haven’t got back to you because we work regular office hours”, and then when they got back to me, “it seems like an authorization problem”. No explanation or plan as to how to correct it, implying I didn’t have the authorization to use software. I spent thousands of dollars purchasing Steinberg products this year (I have receipts and a lawyer). To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I am disgusted. I am totally pissed off. When I had a problem with Sonar, back in the day, the Vice-President (of owners Roland Corp) called me personally. Steinberg support-Yamaha didn’t even take the time to read all the emails I sent them. They read the last one and jumped to an unintelligent conclusion. Shoddy. And cheap.Unworthy of consideration or respect.

I am regretting my choice of Cubase. I think maybe I should have gone Mac Logic Pro. I feel totally betrayed..

Cubase is a good powerful piece of software, but they should focus on reliability rather than new releases with poughkeepsie little featurer just to keep petty cash liquid.

I think I’m going to have to invest in a backup plan because I sure as hell can’t trust support from Yamaha Canada. Otherwise this support group was on the money. People early on said – sounds like a wipe. “When it happened to me what I did was…”.Take a bow. You were right. Steinberg and their agents failed. Miserably.

I am horrified I trusted these people to buy their products. Totally betrayed.
