Hi there! Very basically, no sound on playback. Tried…
A complete re-install of Dorico 4 on my Macbook with the latest software on an M1 max chip
Confirming output was set to my laptop speakers
Downloading Halion sonic specifically from Steinberg’s direct download website
Creating new projects with just piano. One time it asked if I wanted to activate playback, which WORKED (and confirms no issues with I/O) and created a new project entirely, but then subsequently never asked again on the project I actually wanted to use (full big band). I changed my settings to always activate playback, but that hasn’t activated playback on any other project or new project since.
Any suggestions?
For an existing project where it appears to be activated, but you’re getting no sound, try going to Play > Playback Template and choosing one of the factory playback templates, then click Apply and Close. Does that bring back playback?
If not, please do Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the resulting zip file here.
I’ve tried the playback template, but yeah, no dice. I’ve attached my diagnostic report. Thank you all for your help! Dorico Diagnostics.zip (733.6 KB)
I downloaded the Mac link on that page, but still nothing, sadly. I can confirm the power button for playback is set to on, I have HALion sonic instruments installed, and the output is set to my laptop speakers. Is there something that could’ve gone wrong with installation? I have all paths set to default, and the software does indeed let me choose the VSTs in the play tab, so it at least can see them. Just no sound : /
I’m afraid I’ll have to tag in my colleague @Ulf here. From your diagnostics, everything looks to be in order, so I’m not sure why you’re getting no sound on playback.
We’re getting closer! I can indeed play on the keyboard, but I must have installed a version of HALion that lacks a piano sound (see screenshot for installed sounds)? I’m not sure how that’s possible given there’s only one download option on the launcher and website. What am I missing – is there another version of HALion I can try? Thanks everyone!
HALion is just the player. The “Content” is separate.
First, check the Steinberg Library Manager to see if you have HSO, Iconica Sketch, etc, installed correctly.
Then, go to the Steinberg Download Assistant and download the HALion Content, and other libraries that you are missing, like Olympus Micro, Iconica Sketch, etc.
I have downloaded everything I can under the Dorico 4 Pro tab. The HALion Sonic 7.1 “failed to install”, but I have already downloaded that and installed from Steinberg’s website after receiving the message a few days ago. Currently, the Steinberg library manager shows the following libraries all installed to default locations with the read paths also being default (I never changed them). Is Iconica Sketch specifically needed for piano?
If you’re using HALion Sonic 7 and have installed its factory content, then the installer I posted about earlier in this thread:
…is critical. Please also try choosing Dorico Pro 5 in SDA and install the download choice HALion Sonic Selection - Content (recommended). I know this is for Dorico Pro 5, and you are running Dorico Pro 4, but having updated from HALion Sonic SE 3 to HALion Sonic 7, you now need this updated content.
I have done as suggested with Pro 5, unfortunately the sound selection still does not include piano under the “all” category. Below are my installations:
My best guess is something is going wrong with installation given the warning message on SDA (failed due to an unknown error, see screenshot above). I’ve tried nuking all Dorico software (uninstalling Dorico and deleting SDA associated files) and redownloading Dorico 4 Pro with SDA, but that didn’t work either. Is there another option I could take to guarantee fresh installs? I’m on MacOS Sequoia if that’s been known to cause any issues.
I have it in the Steinberg Library Manager, but Dorico isn’t picking up HALion sonic 7. I’ve tried numerous re-installations for an M1 Mac on Sequoia. Is there a brute force method to open HALion sonic 7 directly on Dorico?
Hi @Lars_Kahn , yes, the “brute force” method is to go to Play mode, and there on the left side switch to the VST & MIDI tab. There you can simply instantiate instrument plug-ins of any make (provided they are properly installed). In the diagnostic report you posted a few days ago I could see that you only have HALion Sonic SE 3.5 installed. I don’t know what you have installed in the meantime so it would be good if you could post a fresh diagnostic report. Thanks a lot
