I am using Cubase 13 Pro and every time I switch to a new factory preset (using arrow up or down keys) in the MediaBay, then I have to reset my modulation wheel and set it to max, in order to turn up the volume of the current preset, otherwise it’s too low. Is there a way to set the default volume for all the presets, so that I don’t have to refresh the volume on each chosen preset, manually?
I browse through Iconica Sketch presets using Program Selector window on the left (marked with green) and not Halion’s MediaBay panel on the right side.
When I select a preset the volume is low. I can use my modulation wheel on my midi keyboard to turn up the volume. I didn’t set this up like that - this is default behavior.
The problem is that every time I switch a preset then the volume is reset and I have to reset my modulation wheel, as well, to the top position, otherwise the instrument is too low in volume.
As far as I know, this only happens for Iconica Sketch library. I tried the Halion Symphonic Orchestra library, and the volume stays on top, every time I switch presets.
I don’t understand if you are experiencing my frequent problem, but I noticed that the volume of the vstpreset preview on the mediabay has a lower volume, at least 3-4db compared to the normal audio wav files normalized to 0db.
This is also normal if you think about it since the presets of the virtual instruments should play below 0db to avoid distortion problems and therefore the normalized audio samples will always sound louder.
Also to me the presets opened from the preset manager of the single vst instruments like halion sound louder, and if I try to balance this volume by increasing the general volume of the mediabay preview the audio samples will sound so loud that they break my ears.
Steinberg should create two separate volumes for the preset preview, one for the audio files and one for the vstpresets.
In this way it would be possible to balance the volume of the mediabay with the wav audio files and with the presets of the vst instruments opened in the tracks.
Yes, this is normal. Several orchestral presets of Iconica Sketch are created to change their volume with the mod wheel. Unfortunately they start on quietness when the mod wheel is on minimum value.
It is not only the preview but you also have to do that when you actually load the preset into Halion (Sonic).
As far as I can see there is nothing to be done about it.
Are you telling me that if I one day buy Iconica Opus and want to browse through hundreds of gigabytes worth of factory presets, that I have to move my mod wheel each time I switch a preset, just to be able to hear it?
What you are referring to is not exactly the volume, but the dynamics. It may also be similar, but in orchestral music the dynamics are different from the volume, those presets of iconica sketch evidently start with a layer of dynamics that sounds soft and then get to sound loud through the mod wheel.
So yes, those presets could sound softer than others just opened, if we then consider the fact that you browse them from the mediabay, which has a very high volume discrepancy compared to the wav, you might not even hear anything.
The solution for iconica Sketch could be this:
Download a tool called TinyTask, it allows you to record the movements of the mouse and the keys you press on the PC keyboard and repeat them infinite times.
In this way you could re-save all the presets of iconica sketch, but with the mod wheel pulled up to the maximum. Through TinyTask repeat in process up to the maximum of the presets available, so you don’t have to do it one at a time and look for hours.
Regarding the difference in volume between wav files and vst presets on the mediabay, steinberg should create two separate volumes on the mediabay, one for wav and one for vstpreset, alternatively, you need to decrease the volume of all the wav files you have in all libraries.
This process can also be optimized with a tool called “increase or Decrease Volume Of Multiple WAV Files Software” (it costs 20€ if you want to use it with all the features).
Warning! if you do this you lose all the tags and attributes of the wav files, so do it only if you are used to browsing between folders and not using tags, otherwise don’t do it, let’s hope steinberg finds a solution.
