How to setup Cubasis midi tracks for playback on an external keyboard?

I have connected Cubasis 3 on my iPad to an external keyboard (Yamaha s70xs) via USB cable (using to host on keyboard). I am trying to play a midi file on the iPad with midi routing set to Yamaha keyboard. For all the midi tracks to sound correct, I have to manually setup the mixer on the Yamaha keyboard, i.e. the instrument, volume, and other properties for each track. Is it possible that Cubasis can take all the properties of the tracks in the midi file and set it up automatically on the Yamaha keyboard so that when I hit play, the midi file sounds exactly (or pretty close) on the Yamaha keyboard as it does on the iPad (sound generated by iPads sound card)?

Thanks!
Ron

Hi @ron_pai

Thanks for your message and a warm welcome to the Cubasis forum.

The parameter field of the Key Editor allows to control MIDI parameters (MIDI CC), which include the options for program changes. This option might help to make sure the correct programs and levels are set on your Yamaha keyboard when playing back your MIDI files via Cubasis.

Please find out more in the “Key Editor” chapter of the Cubasis help:
https://download.steinberg.net/downloads_software/Cubasis/Cubasis_3_Web_Help/ED_MIDI.html

The MIDI CC option is also covered in our How to Use Automation and MIDI CC’s in Cubasis tutorial.

Hope that helps!

Best,
Lars

Hi - I’m brand new to the forum and have been playing with Cubasis LE 3 on my IPad Air using the Steinberg UR44C interface. Love everything so far - but I’m not understanding something similar to the OP…

I’d like to be able to record a MIDI track for Piano with my MAudio controller, and then, use that midi track to trigger the external sounds of my Nord Grand and send the stereo AUDIO of the Nord into an new AUDIO track in Cubasis.

I’m not sure whether this is possible or not as several weeks of reading the online manual and searches online talk only about using an external keyboard to trigger MIDI tracks/sounds INTO Cubasis - and thankfully, that is exceptionally easy (whether using sounds native to Cubasis or AUV3s). I just can not seem to find a way to accomplish my goal of using a recorded MIDI track to trigger an external sound from hardware whose audio can be recorded (by that MIDI track) as a new Audio track.

My 2 questions are 1) is my goal possible and 2) if so, what specifically are the steps to make it happen?

Thanks so much for your help!
Steve

Apologies - I just saw the format for posting something like this and wanted to update in that format:

  1. Summary/Title: unable to find information on using a Cubasis LE 3 recorded MIDI track (within a project) to trigger an external MIDI hardware source via Steinberg UR44C so that hardware’s audio can be recorded as an audio file in the same Cubasis project.

  2. Description (with the caveat that I’m not sure this is a current feature) I’m not understanding something similar to the OP…I’d like to be able to record a MIDI track for Piano with my MAudio controller in a Cubasis project and then, use that recorded midi track to trigger the external sounds of my Nord Grand and send the stereo AUDIO of the Nord into an new AUDIO track in that same Cubasis project.

  3. Expected Results - I was hoping the connection of my Nord Grand via both USB and 5-pin MIDI cables through a USB hub which connects the Steinberg UR44C to the IPad Air would be sufficient to be “seen” and selectable as an audio source much like an AUV3 module (such as Ravenscroft 275). Specifically, via ROUTING on the recorded MIDI channel (with visible piano roll using the internal Acoustic Grand), I was expecting an output routing option for the MIDI to go out of the Steinberg, in to the Nord, and trigger audio that could then be routed back in to the project in an Audio track (also through inputs on the Steinberg).

  4. Actual Results - routing offered no such options.

  5. Environment - IPad Air 5th generation iOS 16.5, Steinberg UR44C, Cubasis LE 3.5.1, Nord Grand Piano operating system 1.54

Hi,
I sometimes use a Roland UM ONE midi interface to connect my midi keyboard/sound module to my iPad.
If you look at my photo, numbers 1,2 & 3, you can see I have selected the Midi track channel 1,
I selected Routing #1
I selected No Midi Out #2
In the Midi Out drop down box I selected UM ONE #3
The midi is now output to my midi sound module.
The audio out from this module is routed back to the iPad using an audio interface and into audio track 2 in Cubasis3, tap on Routing and change Mono Input to Stereo Input.
The red button should be showing on the left of the audio track (under the M) and this track must be selected, at the moment this button is white.
Hit record, select Mixer to see recording level.
I apologise if I am telling you something you may already know.
Hope this works for you :slightly_smiling_face:

You aren’t telling me anything I knew at all! I didn’t see the options you’re showing in your picture but I will give it a try this afternoon and report back. Thank you VERY MUCH for the detailed steps and picture! Looking forward to trying this again! It seemed like it should be possible!! Thanks again!!

Also I forgot to ask - when you connect your MIDI module through your interface, are you using USB MIDI, old school 5 pin plugs or both? Thanks!!

Hi Stephen,
The output from my sound module (Boss DS330, very old) is connected to my iPad using a usb audio interface, for quickness I sometimes use a Behringer UCA222, but for best results I use a Alesis Multimix8 usb. The midi interface is connected to my DS330 with a 5 pin “in” DIN plug, my midi keyboard/s are connected using the 5 pin “out” plug (Roland UM ONE). Both interfaces are connected to my iPad Air 4 using a USB 4 in 1 Hub. The majority of the time I connect my keyboard using just usb, also I don’t use the DS330 anymore.
Your Steinberg UR44C interface is a much better option than mine, although a lot more expensive!
I forgot to mention in my first message, turn the midi track 1 down on the mixer otherwise you will record the default piano that automatically loads with Cubasis3….don’t mute it

If things don’t work out with the Midi, get Midi Wrench (free) from the App Store, launch it and just leave it running in the background, it will monitor all mid in/out. I use this app to allow proper midi communication between Cubasis and my Novation Impulse 60 keyboard, without it midi learn and pitch bend won’t work.

SUCCESS!!! I don’t know if I needed the wrench or not but downloaded it first just in case. It worked EXACTLY as you described! Maybe the wrench helped because it (the wrench) saw both the Steinberg and the Nord - yesterday Cubasis only saw the Steinberg and I kept trying different ports to no avail. The Nord showed up in my drop-down menu so I was able to select that directly and PERFECTION!!! Can’t thank you enough!!! One happy camper here!

Your username is completely appropriate!

Thank you Stephen, I’m glad I was able to help you, but I do believe it was Midi Wrench that fixed the problem. When I first bought my Novation Impulse 61 keyboard, I counted down the minutes until it arrived on my doorstep, I ripped open the box, plugged it all in and………it wouldn’t work even after weeks of trying everything, so I launched MW just to see what was going on and :boom:it all started working :confetti_ball: it really is a Swiss Army Knife for midi.
Have fun.
Mike :beers:

MANY thanks to @fixitmania53 for helping sort this out! Because there were a few replies that could be sequenced together differently, I put together a procedure I’ll be using going forward. Sharing in case anyone else had this problem (even if the odds are I’m the only one who didn’t “get it” ).

My use case for this is wanting to avail myself of all the features of Cubasis when getting a MIDI piano track down without moving all my gear to a different location to record my Nord Grand for its audio (it’s just a preference thing for me - if the native piano sounds in Cubasis or any AUV3 piano work for your purposes, this is just extra steps). For my purposes, a workflow might be to record a MIDI track with Cubasis Acoustic Grand and build the track around it - perhaps for several songs at a time and then in one single session, record audio for all the piano tracks using the Nord later. Here is what I’ve put together thanks to the help of fixitmania!!!

Record whatever piano track you need in Cubasis using any native piano sound to get the MIDI piano roll. Listen carefully and clean up any MIDI data to be sure it’s playing as you want it to sound.

Connect IPad to keyboard/sound module and audio interface via USB hub - connect L/R audio of keyboard/sound module out in to 2 input channels of the audio interface.

When ready to trigger the keyboard/sound module with that MIDI track:

  1. open MIDI WRENCH, leave it open in the background (if you don’t have it, download it - it’s free and magical!)

  2. In Cubasis project, create an AUDIO track for the keyboard/sound module

  3. On the prerecorded MIDI track: 1- click ROUTING; 2- Select NO MIDI out; 3- In the drop-down box, select your keyboard/sound module (see numbered photo by Fixitmania in reply #5 above) - at this point, the MIDI out from the MIDI track is pointed to the keyboard/sound module

  4. Open the MIXER view and slide the MIDI channel’s volume down to zero (do not mute the MIDI channel) - when closing the mixer view, ensure the MIDI track is NOT red/armed to record

  5. On the Audio track, ensure the keyboard/sound module’s analog audio output is selected to come in to the Audio track - IMPORTANT: click ROUTING on the audio track and change from mono to STEREO - ensure the Audio track IS red/armed to record (you can open the Mixer view again if you want to monitor levels while recording)

  6. Hit record - the MIDI track will trigger the keyboard/sound module whose analog audio is being recorded in the audio track.

Wondering if you might know how to make the MIDI Out on my Android Galaxy S7 FE tablet using Cubasis 3. I want to send my MIDI track (vocal harmonies) to my TC Helicon Perform-VK vocal processor which has a MIDI In. When I try to use a USB-to-MIDI cable, it doesn’t seem to work. And is there a “Midi Wrench” for Android? Thanks. (I can possibly use CME WIDI when the WIDI Jack arrives - we’ll see?)

Hi stharp1234,
I have covered this topic a while back, so I will give you the link to it, just scroll down to my comments and that should help you.
There is a app on the play store called MIDI BLE Connect, I believe that has the same connection features as MIDI Wrench, but I can’t be 100% sure

Thank you so much! Will definitely look over this (yea, I need to do more search before I ask the questions).

Any further info you need just give a shout, I will try and help :slightly_smiling_face:
I used to play guitar/keyboard instrumentals using my own backings to the elderly day centres in the mid 90s too, I used to create songs that suited their era, they asked if I could play something more modern
Mike.

I have spent many hours now trying to get my MIDI track in Cubasis to send notes to my TCHelicon VoiceLive Touch 2. The MIDI Connector (like MIDI Wrench) shows that my TouchLive has been set for MIDI Input, so I know there’s a connection. (I’m using my tablet USB to the USB B 2.0 port on the TouchLive). The Bank and PCHG codes are correct (I no longer have to use 125,6,7 - that was on the Perform-VK). I have the Acoustic Piano as my MIDI instrument and I have the MIDI Outputs to ALL and Inputs ALL also (even though they aren’t needed). The TouchLive is definitely set to receive MIDI Channel 16 on USB (not the MIDI input port), and in the Cubasis Settings under MIDI I have turned the I/O both on and off, etc. I just can’t seem to find the solution.

I have been watching some YouTube videos about TC Helicon Perform-VK vocal processor, I must say it looks and sounds absolutely amazing for vocal harmonies using a midi keyboard as the controller. Listening to a demo by Sweetwater, it’s just a matter of connecting a midi keyboard to the processor,
In this case it will be Cubasis midi out, secondly the audio out from Cubasis (tablet audio output) connects to the stereo audio input of Helicon, saving the need for a mixer . This is where I am now baffled because this doesn’t seem to work for you. Have you tried just connecting Cubasis midi out to a different midi in sound module to see (hear) if that works? If that works then maybe it’s got something to do with the Helicon setup.
What are your thoughts

I just tried connecting Cubasis (virtual USB port 1) as Output to my Kurzweil keyboard as Input device. The MIDI Connector app shows them connected, and Cubasis is set for ALL for Inputs and Outputs. I cannot get the Cubasis keyboard to trigger the external Kurzweil, nor could I get it to trigger the Korg I also connected. So while the MIDI Connector app SEES the connections, it seems to me that Cubasis is NOT connecting. And in the Cubasis Setup MIDI I tried all those various I/O options. I’m so frustrated!

and here’s to 2 pics showing the connections and the Cubasis “ALL” setting.
