I Can't Get Rid of Reverb

I am new to Dorico 5 Pro and I have started my first project for brass band. It seems that no matter what I do, there is a ton of reverb on playback. I have eliminated all effects that I can find, but it just won’t go away, so I must be missing something. No 3rd party libraries, just HALion Sonic. Why is there so much reverb right out of the box?

I had the same problem, maybe you can find the solution in the link below, at least it helped me. Just ignore the talk about Noteperformer.

Are you using Iconica Sketch? That does come with a fair bit of built-in reverb.

Otherwise, the only reverb added to the samples is in the green “Reverb” mixer channel.

… which didn’t show up on my system, only after:

I don’t have Iconica Sketch or Noteperformer. Is it possible the reverb is in the samples? I can’t imagine why that would be the case.

When I load a small project with HALion as the VSTi, adjusting the three reverb- (or delay-) related knobs makes a huge difference.

Not for you?

Thanks guys for your help. Apparently I do have Iconica Sketch built-in to Dorico 5 under Playback templates. I had not discovered playback templates and was assuming the default playback would be acceptable. It isn’t. Changing the playback template makes a HUGE difference in the sound. I guess I’ll have to read the chapter on playback templates carefully. I am not thrilled with the way the user manual is written.

I agree, but you should blame Steinberg, not the Dorico team. It’s a house style.
