This little gremlin has been the source for a lot of learning and pain lol. I understand I am using a cheap Audio Interface, a Sterling H224 from Guitar Center. Although, if the interface is not connected to a USB 3.0 slot on the MoBo, Cubase will not open. Jumping over to Native instruments, Traktor will not play audio when the interface is connected to a 3.0 slot… I had Cubase and Traktor open simultaneously… When I disconnected the interface to switch to a 2.0 slot, Cubase crashed, along with the PC. Lol unplugging a device while in use is poor practice but to crash the whole computer seems like a bug…? Idk for sure tho, I am only about 1k hours in.
In Windows go to your Documents folder, then Steinberg, then CrashDumps. Upload the latest .dmp file here.
Thanks. The crash seems to happen indeed directly in the Cubase.exe, not in any other module. It also seems that SpringReverb was used just briefly before the crash. Is that a plugin on your computer?
This has to go to Steinberg, therefore I’m summoning @Martin.Jirsak

Martin, can you relay this crash dump to Steinberg?
Yes, I do have a few plugins. I will try to make the time to boot my Linux PC with Windows and replicate the issue using “stock” Cubase. This is something I’ve dealt with since I’ve had the interface. I am glad I always know the culprit when this happens tho, which makes an easy fix. But I am wondering if that’s a bug or if the specifications or parameters of the software need better driver support or something… How do you open the .dmp?
Cubase 12.0.70.464 64bit 2023.12.29 8.16.47.570-freezedump.dmp (773.8 KB)
Cubase 12.0.70.464 64bit 2024.1.13 15.59.41.159-freezedump.dmp (789.1 KB)
You can install the Windows Debugger (WinDbg) from the Windows Store on your machine, but be aware that even the output of WinDbg is not simple to read, especially if you have never seen hex dumps or exception stack traces.
I had a quick look in the last dmp file you have uploaded and this time it is the Windows Audio driver wdmaud.drv that causes the crash. The trace shows a problem with Midi messages, which points to your hardware. Can you try to enable WinRT in your Cubase settings and see if that helps?
Wonderful! Ok. I did not think of it at the time but, the Traktor S2 controller can be an Audio Interface as well… Maybe when I plug something in that has another audio driver, it sends some mixed signals to Cubase. I will try WinRT. Thank you!
Idk if this is a big ask but am I able to run Traktor and Cubase simultaneously? As in, the driver may not like being shared? If that is the case, is this driver dependent? I.E if I get a different interface, is it possible the driver is more developed and refined, allowing multiple software programs to utilize it? Idk how drivers work… May have to take a dive into that…
Thank you so much for sharing this information! I did not know it was this complex. Cubase is teaching me things I’ve never even thought about or knew to exist. Cheers
