Hi, I recently started using Cubasis (iPad) and I have a question that will determine whether I can continue using it or not.
Is it possible to change the stereo output (1/2) of the master channel?
I’m using an Allen & Heath Qu-Pac mixer and the first 22 channels are used as inputs for my synthesizers/samplers and channels 23/24 are for the USB return. As far as I can see it is not possible to change the default channels (1/2) to 23/24 or am I missing something obvious?
Hi Myura,
This is something that has always baffled me, but apparently the Help section indicates that you can, I have a 8 track usb mixer but I can still only have 1 stereo out.
Output Routing
MIDI and audio tracks can be assigned to up to 24 individual outputs (12 stereo pairs) simultaneously. The number of available outputs depends on capability of the connected audio hardware. If no audio interface is connected, only 2 output channels (stereo pair 1/2) are available.
To assign specific outputs, tap the Output display (showing 1/2 by default) and toggle stereo outputs via the buttons in the output popup. This popup window can also be called up by tapping the output panel in the [inspector’s](file:///private/var/containers/Bundle/Application/41C95096-973B-418C-B5FE-7B582C22B208/Cubasis3.app/help/in-app/INSPECTOR.html)routing section.
Note:
If multiple outputs are assigned to a single track, the output panel will display a plus sign, for example “1/2+”.
Only the primary master channel (= the Stereo Output 1/2) has insert effects.
The send effects only route to the primary Stereo Output 1/2 channel.
If you open Settings/Projects (top right) you will see the max output selection.
Mike.
I did indeed read in the manual what you wrote in your reply and I went through these settings as well. On the regular tracks I can assign an output to each track without any problem and it works fine, but when I want to do the same for the master channel I don’t get a popup where I can choose the outputs.
Now there seem to be a few images missing from your reply, so I can’t see if there was anything important there, but the gist of my question is if I can adjust the default output of the master channel, see image.
No, for some reason those empty boxes just appeared, they don’t exist in the Help section
This topic has been covered a few times in the past on this forum, Lars Slowak (Cubasis Project Manager) gave some information for this and it’s in the link below, there are more recent answers to your question but I can’t find them at the moment, I will keep looking
Hope this helps, but I am sure Lars can help you further.
Mike
Hi Mike, thanks again for your answer. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
Before posting my question here, I searched the forum several times to see if my question had been answered before. That’s how I also found the thread you sent, but Lars seems to give the same answer often (about the 24 individual inputs / outputs > 12 stereo pairs), regardless of the question asked, and unfortunately that doesn’t answer my question so far.
Perhaps @LSlowak can confirm my question with a clear Yes/No answer.
If it is possible, I would of course like to hear how, and if it is not possible, I hope Lars can indicate whether this functionality is planned for an upcoming update (thanks in advance).
Recently we’ve updated Cubasis for iOS to support up to 64 inputs and outputs (of course, always depending on the capacities of the audio device in use).
Given this, I’d see no issues using your Allen & Heath device with Cubasis.
Alongside, it might make sense to create a project template which includes your dedicated routing settings.
Since we’re not with the given device ourselves, you may get in touch with our friends at Allen & Heath to confirm that this will all work as expected. I’m at hand to provide them with a Cubasis promo code for testing, if required.
In the Allen & Heath mixer you can set per channel whether it functions as input or as USB return. So it is perfectly possible for me to set channels 1/2 as USB return. In that case, I could route all tracks to master channel 1/2 in Cubasis and I hear sound from my monitor speakers. The only problem is that I only have 22 hardware inputs and I use them all. That means that I have to set channels 1/2 on the Qu-Pac to ‘input’. The first available USB return will then be channels 23/24.
As soon as I set all audio tracks in Cubasis to 23/24 and set the same channels as USB return in the Qu-Pac, I also hear sound from my monitor speakers, but in that case I cannot use the insert effects on the master channel.
That is why I asked the question whether the channels on the master channel can be changed from 1/2 to 23/24.
If I were to ask my question differently, I could also ask whether it is possible to set the master channel insert effects to channels 23/24.
So for the regular tracks I can easily route audio to a specific channel (mono or stereo), but as it seems I cannot do the same for the master channel, or can I?
I suggest to get in touch with our friend at Allen & Heath regarding the best options to use their device with Cubasis. I’m at hand to provide them with a free promo code for testing purposes, if required.
Sorry to hear that the above means that the assigned channels 1/2 on the master channel are not just ‘default’, but ‘fixed’.
There must have been a good reason to implement it this way (I can imagine why this was chosen), however in my experience people in general only buy an audio interface or mixer with more inputs if they intend to actually record audio with it. In most cases one can only use a channel as ‘input’ or ‘usb return’, not both at the same time.
With the support of audio interfaces or mixers with even 64 inputs and outputs one would expect that there would also be a some more flexibility when it comes to the assignment of the output channels of the master channel instead of keeping them fixed on channels 1/2.
I can imagine that many people find it a waste to sacrifice two of their physical inputs while there are often enough usb returns that can be used perfectly well for this purpose.
Therefore I would like to ask if you know if such a change (free assignment of the output channels of the master channel) is in the pipeline for an upcoming update?
@Myura , I’m looking for something similar as you. I want the Master track to output to Mono.
I think I have figured out a way to do it in Cubasis, IF we can find a plugin to Convert Stereo to Mono.
Following the steps below, here’s how to put the plugin in the right place in the Master track so it sends a Mono mix out both L & R.
In the Master track, tap on the small e. That opens up the Master track plugin area.
At the bottom of that list, you’ll see a horizontal blue bar with a raised rectangle in the middle. Pull up on that bar and add the Stereo to Mono plugin below the blue bar.
If that works like the rest of the tracks in Cubasis, it should be in the signal path after the Master fader, which should be the Final output. Any plugins above that blue bar are in the signal path before the Master fader. Shouldn’t it work correctly either way? Logically, yes.
Let me know, please, if you find a Stereo to Mono conversion plugin and I’ll do likewise.
