I’ve got a situation where a transferred xml file missed a couple of meter changes. While most of the work was in 3/4, there were a few bars in 2/2 that were not transferred. How can I rebar those measures from 3/4-2/2 without losing a measure or effecting everything that comes after?
Put in a meter signature as a “stopper”. If measure 16 should be in 2/2, but is currently 3/4, put the 3/4 in bar 17, then you can do whatever you like in the bar(s) preceding it. Or, am I misunderstanding your question?
Well, here’s what happens. Let’s say bars 20-24 are marked as 3/4, they should be 2/2. So, when I make 20-24 2/2 , bar 24 gets completely removed. Now I have 3 bars of 2/2 and where bar 24 should go back to 3/4, it’s now bar 23. Make sense?
T
Sorry, 20-23 should be marked as 2/2. 4 bars of 2/2… just to be clear
Clarity would be to upload the project (or a cut down version) so we can see.
Telling us a 3/4 bar should be a 2/2 bar is meaningless until we understand the current musical content of that bar and what your expectations for that content are.
Well, you’ll have to add another bar before you change the meter. Changing the meter re-arranges the music into the new meter, but doesn’t add beats. You have a total of 12 quarter notes in the four 3/4 bars, so when it’s rebarred you still have 12 beats which only fill 3 bars of 2/2 - you need more space. You can do this:
–Put in the 2/2 as previously described
–Add a bar of 4/4 before the 2/2 measure
–Change the meter to 2/2, then delete the 4/4 signature
Takes about 10 seconds, and that’s using the scenic route. There may be an easier way, but really, this is pretty quick.
Got it! Thanks !

Janus,
I’ve been at this for a bit this morning and am still not getting the result I would like. Here is a screenshot of the original and my file. This will get very confusing for players trying to read the quadrupelette in that 3/4 time. I also can’t seem to hide the 4. Suggestions?
I beleive it’s important to have a poly meter perhaps? Maybe 3/4 and the 2/2 marked in this bar like in various french works.
Anyhow, I’m a bit stuck

To replicate the original you can do this:
In the bar after 6, enter shift-M 3/4 alt-Enter (and hide it using the properties panel).
At 6 enter shift-M 2/2,3 alt-Enter this will enter an independent time signature pickup bar with 3 beats (this will keep alignment with the rest of the score).
Hide the tuplet numbers (using the properties pane)
Hi @Dilorenzo, interesting case. I tried to replicate the initial situation, and made a short video to show a possible alternative procedure (as the one describer by @Janus) for the correction.
If you have music after the 3/4 bar, you can also activate the Stop Position red bar to avoid changes after it, due to insert mode:
Sorry Janus. This isn’t working for me. Every time I enter the 2/2, it removes a bar.
When you enter the 2/2, Dorico will re-distribute all subsequent notes (in that part) up to when it comes across another time signature.
You might find it easier to work backwards from the explicit 3/4 in the 5th bar of 6. Enter that. Then enter the (hidden) 3/4 in the 2nd bar of 6. And finally enter the 2/3,3 pickup at 6. That way you should preserve the total number of beats and the alignment with the rest of the score.
Ok,
I’ve tried things both Janus and Christian’s way. In the images below, I added stop bar at measure 49. It is shown in the image below. I then hid the time signature. I then (as Christian suggested, removed the tuplets before entering the time signature. I tried both ways by the way. After I entered the 2/2 tempi, all the music from where the stop point was entered, go moved. Do you see this in my second image? Am I doing something wrong?
Step one is actually the bottom image.
The end of bar 48, lower staff is problematic because the 8 tuplets goes through the barline, and the stop position works better if at its point there is no tied notes or tuplets crossing.
Try to do the process only in the two upper staves, first.
Then try deleting the 8 tuplet (the notes first, and then the tuplet) and try the procedure on the lower staff.
Be aware of when insert mode is enabled or disabled, while doing your edits!
I you would like to post this passage as cut-down project, we can have a look.
Ok,
I suppose I can just erase all data in those bars and rewrite the winds for 2/2 time, but that doesn’t resolve the rest of the orchestra who remain in 3/4 time. I don’t want them to see 2/2 or have the music rewriten in those bars. As I mentioned earlier, it is quite common in early french music to see both mutli meter indication in a single bar. Is there a way to write 2/2+3/4 in a bar? I wonder if this would solve the issue? If I stick with the 2/2 to address the tuplet situation, all other instruments who remain in 3/4 get messed up, notation wise.
I’m happy to send it as is since it’s a transcription. What’s the procedure?

Drag the file into the text editor, or use the "upload file"icon.
And also upload the original image of the score for all those bars.

The original score PDF is larger than 4 MB. It’s available on IMSLP. La Valse. https://s9.imslp.org/files/imglnks/usimg/4/49/IMSLP923399-PMLP07611-Ravel-La-Valse-full-score-FE.pdf
Hey Guys,
I wanted to attach two more images. I was able to make a little progress, but not there yet. I got a 2/2 bar in the score and re-entered all the data for those bars for this reduction. However, I notice two things, one, I’m a bar short for the 2/2 players and that the measures don’t align evenly stacking on top one another, like the original score pictured. See Rehearsal letter 6.
Hi @Dilorenzo, it was a little work (the xml is very weird).
I used 2/2,1.5 pickup bars as local time signatures, with hidden 8:6e tuplets. I had to use insert mode strategically, and sometimes move note groups or delete some rests. I added first of all 2 bars (that I then deleted) before bar 49 (where the stop bar begins) to have space when insert mode moves material when deleting the original tuplets. (maybe I could have avoided some steps, but here the result. I hope is what you needed).
