Level 41 (original)

HI there heres another oldie from the 80`s originally recorded on a Fostex X-15 4 track cassette player. i managed to mix a few bits of music from the 4 track recording with a new version recorded in Cubase .its a nod to the band Level 42 who i loved back in the 80s. hope you enjoy it ,thanks. Nice track, I liked it. And another nice guitar solo at the end.
Still don’t like the snare!
Overall a bit dull/muffled, as in not enough highs - but I put that down to my mouldy old dough ears.
It seems, to me, that maybe the attack on some of the guitars is a bit too quick? Probably my ears, again.

Hi Googly, thanks for your reply and comments, you are probably right about the snare , when I’m mixing the tracks it doesn’t sound that bad compared with some reference tracks over my system which is an old Creek 4140 amp and some spirit absolute 2 monitors and some old fostex headphones but when I transfer the file to my phone and I listen on some in ear blue tooth things which are sort of ok (I think lol) ,my tracks sound very bright ,so I go back and try re-adjust the tone ,I’m gonna have to re think that one …I think, not think I know I’m a bit rubbish at programing drums and the tone of drums and the bass as well i need to give them more time .I used to have a little studio done out with acoustic foam tiles and my mixes seemed more consistent then . Guitar isn’t that bad though as long as I don’t twiddle with amp nobs ,the simpler the amp the better ,like an old Marshall simple, the sound is there straight away, but if you give me an amp with too many choices like them model amps , terrible. Yes I hear the guitar parts with the fast attack on the compressor yes it does sound a bit too much ,I was re adjusting some things tonight but the Mrs distracted me with something so I’ll be back on it tomorrow lol ,thanks I appreciate the feedback .it all helps .

I know what you mean - I have Amplitube but never use it. Spend too much time looking for the perfect amp. I use two of the Friedman amps from Brainworx - the Dirty Shirley and the Buxom Betty (where do they get these names!). With a Waves wahwah I’m all set with my MusicLab Rick and Les Paul (I no longer record my guitar playing, although I use my Les Paul (ooh, look at me!) to work out melodies and chords before opening Cubase).
My ears really are damaged - 50% down in my left ear and 75% in my right, with the highest frequency I can hear being around 5KHz - so take what I said about dullness with a pinch of salt.

Hi Googly, sorry about your hearing ,it must be frustrating.I think you are right though about the snare and it’s all relative no matter how you hear things .I’ve put a second mix up with a brighter snare but I couldn’t resist fiddling with other stuff lol ,the arppegiator bit is a bit loud now lol, oh well. At least I’ve saved my previous mix.
