Mac Studio M5 (OT)

So, finally ordered a new Mac, replacing our 9-year-old iMac 27"
Happy camper, but rice and beans for a while now.

Jesper

I imagine that will be a marvelous machine, Jesper — felicitations!

(In the process you made me realize that my M1 Studio is now 5-1/2 years old. ā€œTime flies!ā€)

Thanks, Judd. Forgot to say that I ordered a new Studio Display also. Yay.

Jesper

What’s wrong with rice and beans? (Long-time vegetarian here…) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Ha, nothing wrong with that @rpearl. I tried to sell a kidney, but to many beers in my younger days, so it wasn’t sellable.

Jesper

Couldn’t even sell that kidney for beans, eh?

:joy:

Jesper

I am GREEN with envy! That’s the Mac Studio configuration I wanted last year but couldn’t afford it…good for you!!!

Thanks @kasky1. Couldn’t really afford it either. Hopefully, you’ll get yours eventually.

Jesper

You really are on rice and beans for a while. lol

Just one? :winking_face_with_tongue:

5

Now I am PURPLE with envy cause I just can’t stand it! Happy for you!!!

Congrats @jesele! I bought an M4 Mini last year. It’s so fast for everything I need. I’m sure many of us grew up with the gigantic Pentium towers (or worse)… modern compute in such a small form factor is mind-blowing.

How much ram, @dan_kreider ?

Ha, indeed @Romanos

Jesper

Ha ha, yes, otherwise, just beans.

Jesper

Thanks, Dan, the Mac Studio is probably overkill, but hoping it will last 8-10 years like our old iMac did.

Jesper

Thanks, Kent.

Jesper

32 GB, plenty of headroom for me; probably could have gone with 24. I have tried dabbling in VSTs in the past and found it much too tedious, so it’s just NP for me, plus Pianoteq and Noisefirm (handbells).

The Mini never really has to exert itself. Sometimes I feel like I should take it for a walk lest it start getting sedentary.

Congratulations. That will be a fantastic machine, and definitely will see you through a decade.**

I’m still on an M1 Pro MBP, and an M2 Pro Mini, both with 32Gb RAM and 1 Tb storage. The M1 is still good as a portable, though massive Dorico files do get a bit sluggish. The M2, I have no qualms nor quibbles.

** Assuming the machines don’t rise up against us. I note that the Terminator came back to 1984 from 2029…
