Mixer undo and unlimited insert slots.

It is rumored that Cubase 9 will have 9 inserts; Cubase 10 will have 10, etc.

It’s just been a waiting period to get past version 8 and the 8 inserts we’ve had.

So it should start getting better soon, albeit slowly.

MOAR slots please!
One of the features that attracts lots of producers to Ableton is the ability to create plugin stacks. Frankly I’m sick of ReWiring Ableton into Cubase.
You could even set different max insert limits based on the type of Cubase purchased, Pro vs Artist.

It’s just so strange that the inventor of ASIO and VST should have its flagship product limited to 6 freezable inserts + 2 non-freezable.

I really do think it’s a corporate culture thing. The measuring stick being, if Cubase can produce a little 12 track indie rock demo for a corporate video, for the project managers at Steinberg moonlighting on it, after hours, mission accomplished.

I still can’t help notice that those with more involved sound design needs, the signed, hardcore, professional electronic music producer using Cubase, seemed to have developed a laughably “destructive” workflow where everything is bounced again and again and again. Six freezable inserts is more than enough when it’s multiplied by 3 bounces.

These guys have even said on camera, in their tutorials, etc. that they like “committing” via the bounce, that it helps push them forward. They love to drive the point home by deleting the original track.

There is a whole “staying tight on the grid with audio” philosophy that has sprung up to further embolden the practice.

And so no one complains.

The project managers moonlighting with their band on the side: 8 inserts are enough.

Even after this small band adds “a keyboardist” to the group, the technical demands increase by one stereo track. With maybe a little EQ and compression on it (if that). Done. They’re never going to want more.

The attitude is further bolstered by professional audio engineers in the forums, again mostly acoustic oriented, who love to point out that “you’re doing it wrong” if you need more than 3 inserts.

These guys have never had to make a layered, modern kick drum from sine waves in their life. They have no idea how complex the sound design can get on each channel.

Then we have the hardcore dance producer who bounces after each edit, who is still on Cubase 5: 8 inserts are enough.

The European psytrance producers still on Cubase 5, on ten year old computers, monitoring the mix on 50 dollar multimedia speakers – veritable prodigies for doing so well with so little (and always proud to point out how crappy their setups are) – are never going to want more. They’ll still be on Cubase 5 in five more years. It’s like their rite of passage; of due paying. They’ve mastered the art of irreversibility of audio.

What a weird skill to have to be good at when we have computers.

It’s maddening.

There is no voice of reason in this fight, except this sad little thread.

I’d like to give in and join the crowd, just bounce after each edit and “commit,” but I’m just not skilled enough for that kind of destructive workflow yet.

What’s even more baffling is understanding why I cling to Cubase so much. I should be using Ableton or Bitwig.

It’s just I’ve been using it since the '90s (and yet still suck enough that I can’t “commit to the bounce”).

I guess I shouldn’t quit my day job.

it’s inevitable and will come, i’m sure. but yes it is quite frustrating how rigid a relatively small company can get (in how features aren’t just done but have to go through a whole process of are we even going to start working on this?)

The downside of perfectionism. “All or nothing.” I understand it well.

Meanwhile, even adding 2 more inserts would be life-changing, daw-wise, to some of us.

I’m sure it’ll be unlimited inserts when it does arrive, with a fancy preset chainer and ability to choose pre or post fader.

The only other thing that I fear will delay it even more (that I forgot to add to my rant) is just when there should be widespread cry of “we need more inserts for console emulation, trim controls, hpf and lpf, compressors, tape saturation, peak limiters, etc.” they just put some stock, mediocre version of it in the channel strip. “Problem solved.”

It then becomes more argument-ammunition to those (oddly) wanting to debate the necessity of more inserts. “It’s enough for me, don’t know why anyone would want more. If you want a peak limiter, just use the one in the channel strip. What, 4 bands without mid/side in an EQ aren’t enough for you?” :unamused:

I bet we see Magneto II in the channel strip before we seen more inserts.

Finally (the other point I forgot to add), more inserts will mean even more 3rd party crashing which always reflects poorly on Cubase.

There is zero incentive for them to increase the insert count.

Or, add the option to disable mousewheel moves the fader.
It’s so easy to accidentally move a fader when trying to scroll with the mousewheel if the cursor is in the wrong place.

+1 for Fader Undo

It’s ridiculous not to have it especially given how easy it is to accidentally change fader values by mousing over them. It stops a lot more people from making a full jump from other DAWs than they realize. Hopefully this comes in the next update.

More insert slots please and mixer undo.

+1,000,000,000 Fader undo!

Just got back into Cubase after being in PTHD world for some years, and really?? There’s no fader undo??
Aw c’mon man. That just seems soo - Idunno - “standard” nowadays?

Guess I’ll pitch a tent in this camp.

Studio One has a great implementation of the chaining of effects and splitting in version 3. Moar FX!!!

+1 for unlimited insert slots

  • one for both, cant believe cubase still doesn’t have either in 2015

+1 for the the mixer undo.

definitely more inserts but unlimited sounds like its going to break things / require a UI redesign which is never going to look good for the majority of users who never use 8. Personally I’ve needed more than 8 on many occasions but given up on groups etc and just bounced and started again

+++1 UNLIMITED INSERT SLOTS!!!

Unlimited insert slots is pretty much something that should be standard for any DAW in my opinion. I feel that Cubase was structured around the idea of physical mixing devices, and as such also incorporated a strict structure around its flexibilities. While this in itself can lead to being resourceful and more creative in instances to work around the limitations, it also is a shortcoming in comparison to modern production capabilities that are standard in other applications.

One way to navigate the interface issues that it would cause is to have a search filter about the effects that allow typing to filter out the other inserts, or you could always just let them scroll.
