Somehow, all my modulator assignments disappeared in a project.
And however it happened, I didn’t save the project (I know this for a fact), yet they did not return when reloading the project.
When I encountered this, I had one project open and opened a second project to compare modulation settings/inserts between projects. I then closed the second project, returned to the 1st open projects and the assignments were gone. I then re-opened the 2nd project to see them and they were also gone.
I JUST TESTED AGAIN, with a previous revision and surely enough, Activating/Deactivating between projects removed some (this time not all), of the assignments.
AND FOR SOME REASON, this is somehow changing something, in which the modulator assignments do not return!
ALTHOUGH, IT SEEMS LIKE RESTARTING CUBASE BROUGHT THEM BACK. THANK ALL THAT IS GROOVY.
-These projects are large, and take a moment to load/unload
-These projects are similar to each other in that they are based on the same template (With modulators pre configured)
-High memory and CPU demanded templates.
Cubase 15.0.3
EDIT
Confirmed, I created a small simple test project
-
Create project, create stereo audio track, insert Volume plugin.
-
Add LFO Modulator, make 3 assignments to each fader in the Volume plugin.
-
Save project
-
Save new version.
-
Load the previous version:
I cannot confirm this issue. With your repro the connections get restored properly upon loading.
There must be something else on your side.
Are you mac or windows.
I’ve recreated the issue multiple times.
Which Modulators did you test with?
Also, the assignments have to be to VST inserts.

Also, I’m having the same problem with Duplicating Track, Importing Track Archive, and Importing Tracks from Project, maybe you can test those as well?
Thanks
Win10, my profile is still up to date.
I performed the exact steps from your repro.
Im Win 11… if that matters.
Did you try:
Also, I’m having the same problem with Duplicating Track, Importing Track Archive, and Importing Tracks from Project, maybe you can test those as well?
Interesting I did another test, and it didn’t cause the problem this time.
But then I continued to repeat the steps and fiddle with opening/closing projects and it eventually did it again.
I’ll revise my steps, and while doing the open/close testing, keep checking the Modulators assigments
-
Create project, create stereo audio track, insert Volume plugin.
-
Add LFO Modulator, make 3 assignments to each fader in the Volume plugin.
-
Save project
-
Save new version.
-
Load the previous initial (first) version:
-
Close the now enabled previous (first) Version.
-
Enable the 2nd version.
-
Close the 2nd version (there should be no open projects now)
-
Open the 1st version.
-
Close the 1st version, now open the 2nd version.
-
Now Close the 2nd version, and open the 1st version.
-
Without closing the first version, open the 2nd version…
- If you haven’t encountered the bug yet, just try activating project versions back and forth multiple times without closing them.
I can confirm that using this simplified testing method caused the problem:
- Close Cubase/Boot Cubase fresh
- Create new project
- Create stereo audio track
- Insert volume plugin
- create modulator LFO
- Make 3 LFO modulator assignments to the faders in the volume plugin
- Make sure the modulators are actually doing something, and make some adjustments to them so that they aren’t all the same.
- Save project
- Save New Version
- Open the initial project version (without closing the current version)
- The problem may or may not have occurred. In my last two tests, the problem did not occur at this point.
- …If the problem did not occur, alternate Activating the two projects without closing them until the problem occurs.

Video proof:
You can see in that video, that they even re-appear for one project or another randomly but then disappear again.
And also interesting to note - it only seems to affect the Assignments beyond the first. on the assignments/knobs after the first assignment disappear/reappear.
It must be some sort of instability in the Load/Unload, perhaps because they are in a constant audio-rate state. No idea really.
Not sure why mod edited my title to remove the ‘Critical Data Loss’ - this could really screw up hours, days, even weeks of deep complicated modulator work. It’s enough of a bug for me to consider not using modulators at all because now I will always question if they have loaded properly.
