yeah miswrote it and edited my original message to make it more clear.
yeah same here on the modifier section, never really used it much and also looking into any new clever ways to use it.

Yes, there is a finite number of modifier variations for the Select tool. So, yes, you have to make a choice. There is no obligation to add Shift as a modifier? Just re-assign Ctrl instead or whatever other modifier function you do not use. If you need them all then there is no solution!
You did say:
sadly I do use them all based on their defaults- want I meant was I haven’t had to change anything in that section etc.
I also found the clip gain visibility presets distracting during editing, so I ended up setting it to “Never” just to stay focused.
Is there a way to bypass grid snapping when using the Pencil tool for gain editing?
I often avoid the Range tool for gain changes, since the sudden vertical jumps can easily cause clipping. Instead, I add fade points manually using the Pencil tool.
Also, when I draw a large number of gain envelopes, the event volume operations start feeling noticeably sluggish.

Anyone else noticing similar behavior?
What do you mean by ‘clip gain visibility presets’?
You are probably wishing for some kind of permanent or temporary suspension of grid snapping but this is not possible. Why not just use the keyboard shortcut (J) to de-activate Snap whenever you use the pencil tool?
Thanks for your reply!
By “clip gain visibility presets,” I was referring to Preferences > Event Display > Audio > Show Event Volume Control, specifically when it’s set to “Always.” I found it visually distracting during editing, so I changed it to “Never.”
Regarding the Snap behavior — yes, I know I can toggle it with the J key, but doing that every time is a bit inconvenient.
I often use grid-based editing when working with events, but when I’m editing clip gain directly on the waveform, I usually want more precision and don’t need grid snapping at all.
It would be great if there were a preference option to disable snapping only for the Pencil tool, or at least for event volume editing, to make detailed work smoother.
Well right, that’s the whole reason we have the ‘Never’ option. This is available precisely for that purpose.
I guess that if you wanted to make a request for that it would be better in a specific topic on that subject. TBH it’s unlikely to get any traction as part of this particular topic.
In the meantime, you could make a macro to select the Pencil tool and simultaneously switch off the snap.
Thanks, Stingray — I really appreciate your input.
I agree that things like the snapping behavior or minor UI quirks can often be handled with macros or just by getting used to the changes. Your suggestion to use a macro for toggling Snap when selecting the Pencil tool is a practical workaround, and I might try setting that up.
That said, what I’m personally struggling with isn’t so much those smaller workflow issues.
The real problem I’m encountering is that editing becomes noticeably sluggish when a large number of gain envelopes are present.
In my case, zooming and dragging gain points becomes less responsive the more envelopes I draw. It starts to feel like the system is struggling to keep up with the visual updates or redraws.

I’d be curious to know if anyone else is experiencing this kind of slowdown.
Hopefully Steinberg might consider optimizing performance for high-density clip gain edits in a future update.
I have to say this new clip gain has been for a while now. I curse it everyday . I hate it. I am always having resize or zoom or scroll just to get to the event fader , then when i touch it it seems like it moves , very clumsy . Why can’t we have an option for the previous , in the middle on top and always a quick easy grab. this so called upgrade is not an upgrade ay all to me ! Usually i can adapt however this one never gets better
FYI you don’t have to use the graphical event volume fader at all. You can hide it in Preferences and select a modifier for changing the event volume just by pressing the modifier key and clicking and dragging up or down on the event… set this up in Preferences>Editing>Tool Modifiers>Select Tool>Edit Velocity… try setting this modifier to Ctrl, for example. This is lightning fast and fuss free to use. Of course, you can also change the event volume using keyboard shortcuts for increment/decrement volume. See the video in the second post of this topic (above).
There have been a lot of topics on this subject and it’s clear that the middle handle is not coming back. For a full discussion on this subject including many of the misunderstandings of the new event volume design see: Please give us back the eventgain node in the middle of the event
imho clip gain in N14 is really great!!
I’ve just noticed one thing I would like to see in the future.
When using the Range tool pressing shift for the segment detection it would be easier if one just could grab the section anywhere while selected and pull It up/down instead of always navigate to the button on top of the selection. Just like the regular clip gain adjustment works with shift.
