I’m trying to notate some fingered tremolos in 8th notes in 3/4 time.
I enter two 8th notes, then select both and click the “two strokes multi-note tremolo” from the menu. The result looks like two quarter notes with two dashes in between. This is clearly wrong - it should be two 8th notes with two dashes in between.
The result is the same even if I force duration on the 8ths.
The dotted notes are correct; the beaming is non-standard according to modern rules. There was a workaround solution in this thread for non-dotted notes. But Applying the 2-note tremolo seems to prevent Dorico from displaying dotted notes.
Perhaps to get this notation you could create dotted noteheads (one for line notes and another for space notes, to place the dots correctly). This is a bit beyond my ability, but possibly @johnkprice might want to devise a workaround?
Put two dotted sixteenths in 3:6y tuplets inside a 12:8y tuplet before applying a two strokes multi-note tremolo. Then hide the inner tuplet numbers and the outer tuplet bracket:
Wooow @johnkprice ! This is really clever, Bravo.! The logic and possibilities of nested tuplets are so deep and powerful and I think I need a couple billions more neurons to have found your solution by myself
Thank you for your kind words, @Christian_R . It was when I tried to use Dorico to reproduce the string parts near the end of Le jardin féerique from Ma mère l’Oye by Maurice Ravel that I figured out how to create these nonstandard tremolos.
The 3:6’s are needed to show the eighth-note beams. In modern notation this would be written as dotted quarters with 3 tremolo beams not touching the stems.
And yes, Dorico copies only what is selected, so you must show and select signposts for any hidden tuplets in order to copy them.
The three measures below show what happens when a two strokes multi-note tremolo is applied to two eighth notes, two sixteenth notes, and two sixteenth notes in 1:2x tuplets, respectively. The tremolo in the first measure has the desired duration but not the desired appearance. The tremolo in the second measure has the desired appearance but not the desired duration. The tremolo in the third measure has the desired duration and the desired appearance after hiding the tuplets:
