Perhaps I’m missing something but I would expect that when I’ve written some music and add a bar repeat over it, it would hide the notes (similar to how this works in Finale with staff styles). What currently happens is that the repeat sign is added along with the notes that stay visible.
Is it particularly hard to hide the notes or is there a concept behind this that just isn’t finished yet?
The measure-repeat symbols are (currently) only graphic placeholders. They do not hide underlying notes (as the corresponding Style does in Finale) nor do they actually play back (yet).

We don’t plan to make bar repeats hide any underlying music, because that should be unnecessary once they play back: they will simply be able to play the music in the bar or bars that precede them.
We do, however, plan to make slash regions hide any underlying music.

That really does sound good – and plausible. I guess I just have to get used to not writing any music that I want repeated then (as is necessary in Finale). 
On the other hand, it looks a little buggy as it is right now, with notes and repeat signs visible at the same time. Perhaps something should be done about that in future, too.
Daniel - I appreciate that the bar repeats function well for play back, but my concern is about how the look. I want the notes to be visible on the score layout, but NOT visible in the part layout. It feels unsettling to delete the underlying notation just to make the repeats look right.
Is there a better solution for this?

Is this possible to accomplish without deleting the notes from the part, printing that part, then pasting them back in so they still exist in the piece?

Welcome to the forum, mfabulich. At the moment there’s no practical way to show bar repeats in the part but have the music written out in the full score (or indeed vice versa). I recognise the requirement and I hope we’ll be able to come up with a good solution for this in future.

No, not so far. There have been several feature requests along these lines, one of which is quite thorough! Recommended reading.

I like the options that are given with the repeats, however, as an orchestrator and arranger, I am having a hard time with having to delete all the notes just to have the bar repeats.
I’m currently writing a piece for a 60 piece orchestra and I have a repetitive piano line for many parts of the score. From the arranging perspective it is helpful for me to both see the notes (instead of the bar repeat signs) and hear the part. But, from the engraver perspective where I am making the chart easier to read for the player, I now need to go back and delete the notes to replace with bar repeats (about as far as 20). Unfortunately, the cost of doing this is that if I get notes on the score and have to make changes, it makes editing the part much more tedious.
I understand the logic behind it, but I do feel there are plausible cases where it would be much more helpful and faster to either have it hide the notes, or even more useful, to show bar repeats in the part but not the score.
I hope this issue would be addressed sooner, especially for instrument parts. As other users have mentioned as well, right now I’m writing a piece where the bass part is 7 pages long, without any place to turn pages, but where the instrument is playing mainly an ostinato. Yes, I can go to the score and manually delete the notes in several dozens of bars, but it would be really awesome if I didn’t have to.
I’m no programmer, so I really don’t know, but is it really a lot different from having slash regions hide the notes underneath?

Edit: Doing things manually doesn’t help when the bass has several chord symbols per bar. It just makes you do a lot more manual work to hide those — assuming you can do that: I’ll have to find out…
I agree Tiago. Also, don’t get me started on how difficult it is to work with chords after the fact…
It is hard to meet the demands of everyone, but if there is a strong collective voice that is asking for the same thing, I do hope Dorico can find a way to implement it in future versions. Dorico is doing a lot that’s a big step up from other programs. With that, I hope they continue to make changes that serve the user, not the idea of how the user should do things. I’ve read numerous times in forums and seen in YT videos of people saying that other notation programs let you write music how you want to, while Dorico allows you write music how Dorico wants you to. I see their point, but I am still willing to wait it out and see if Dorico can meet us pop and jazz composer/arrangers somewhere halfway.
Our aim is always to meet the real needs of our users. But we can’t work on everything at the same time, and our most troublesome task is figuring out how to prioritise the infinite demands on our limited development time. Please rest assured that we haven’t forgotten about this request, and we will work on it when we can.
I can only imagine how bogged down you and the team may be with requests (and complaints). Thank you for responding and I look forward to the future upgrades.
