I’m notating a part for drum kit, and the vast majority of the time I want my snare drum to have stems facing up. However, occasionally I want my snare drum to have stems facing downwards and be beamed together with the bass drum. In order to do this I have created a second snare drum instrument in the ‘Edit Percussion Kit’ dialogue and then I can use this ‘Snare Drum 2’ when I want the stems to be downwards. However I was just wondering if this is actually the correct approach as this does somewhat feel like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut?

I think you’ve found the more sensible way to do that. I’d be curious to see whether power users have other workflows for this (that is the workflow I recommend in such cases anyway, so if I’m wrong, I’d like to know !!!)

Suppose you have many different kinds of nut. One can be opened using a sledgehammer, one with a chainsaw, one with a hydraulic press, a fourth one with a dentist’s drill. My own nutcracker:
The other option would be to select the notes in question, right-click and choose from the context menu Percussion > Change Voice > Extra Down-stem Voice (for example).
