I think of note with this new Musescore 4.5, is the addition of laissez vibrer ties, and especially the way ties will apparently work correctly with 1st and 2nd endings. I haven’t checked it out yet, but this tie behavior is something that Dorico can’t do at the moment. There’s nothing like peer pressure!! ![]()
Dorico doesn’t currently handle ties with repeat endings, but it has had LV ties for quite some time now. The general workaround for the repeat endings issue is to fake a tie with an LV tie.
To Musescore experts: has it courtesy accidentals for tied notes at system/frame breaks?
Ouch. Did not realize that about Dorico. In the past, I did have works that involved ties across ending repeat barlines, and it was trivial in Finale without any faking, and thus playback was also correct:
It would be nice if Dorico might support this sort of thing in the future. I haven’t needed it in a bit but certainly could, and others would as well.
Dorico has no problem with what you’ve got in your screenshot. The problem is when there are first and second endings, and the note before the ending is tied into the ending.

@Christian_R posted a solution for this which I like even better than adding an l.v. tie and changing it in Engrave mode – add a grace note ahead of the first note in the 2nd ending, tied to the note, then hide the stem and notehead.

Sorry-I thought, based on the previous comments, that it was an issue with ties over repeats in general. Good to know it would not be an issue with anything that doesn’t involve 1st and 2nd endings. Thanks for the clarification.
MS is showcasing large time signatures in their latest version, which Dorico has had for years. Of course each development team is going to prioritize different things and bring them to each app in different times.
Bear in mind that Dorico 6 will land some time this year, and who knows what capabilities that will have.
I tried the MuseScore 4.5 version with tied notes to 1st and 2nd ending sections. It works very well and without hardly any effort at all. However, the audio does not work. I think this would be a great time for Dorico to develop a solution that works as easily as MuseScore’s new solution, and to ALSO have correct playback! ![]()
There’s no doubt that the « Death » of Finale has given a boost to competing software developers.
MuseScore, bought out by a Russian company, is going to gain in power, and I suppose will soon be paying for itself.
As for Sibelius, the latest versions 2025 still propel it to the top of the podium.
We’ll see what Dorico 6 has to offer… which will be released in a few weeks or months’ time now.
@ObiwanKenobi
Can you explain why Sibelus is good according to you, and more on the Musescore bought by a Russian company?
Thanks
I’ve already explained this on this forum.
For my repertoire (Early XVIIIe French baroque music) Dorico doesn’t offer me the necessary flexibility.
I’m waiting for many improvements in Dorico before working with this software too. I say “also” and not “exclusively”. After all, what carpenter would be mad enough to do everything with just one tool?
I know that these words, dictated by reason, are not in line with the “ideology” of this forum, but that doesn’t matter. I speak with honesty.
@ObiwanKenobi
I cannot even use Dorico5 when I open it every now an then. At present time I am not able to do anything. There is not a single function that works.
It’s sad because I hear that the audio rendition is better than Musescore’s.
But the rest of the program is not useable. I admire who is using it without throwing it away after 5 minutes.
Is it possible to connect the midi output of Musescore to the input of Dorico? For example, the fast repeated notes of strings would play as it were from a score in Dorico?
(I do not think so)
I know you like to be kind of “poil à gratter” but there really is no such thing as a cult or an ideology here, so I beg to differ. Most of the people here are serious about music, about engraving, and about honesty.
Upload your diagnostics (Help>Create Diagnostic report) and someone will help you.
@Janus
As you mention the topic, I can say that Dorico is too prone to freeze the audio system, freeze itself, crash, fight with Halion for missing samples and so on.
Were all those diagnostic reports that were requested from users some time ago useful? Did they lead to any improvement? I am an inattentive and occasional reader of the forum, so I am not up to date. Still asking for diagnostic reports?
Every individual installation is different. Your Diagnostics are specific to your set up. And if “nothing works”, I’m sure the team would like to help you sort it out.
Come on, if we don’t claim here that Dorico is the best in the world and the other software is crap, you’re going to get assassinated.
I’m past the age of such things… and that’s why I don’t come here very often any more, waiting for the next major versions of Dorico, hoping for some convincing improvements.
Allez, I’m going back to my burrow even though the groundhog is out!
@Janus
I have to agree with @ObiwanKenobi, adding that it is not possible to discuss with many people here, being that some things of Dorico are unacceptable.
Many bugs are in fact present, and many functions are simply not useable.
I am truly sincere when I wonder what are you all really doing with Dorico.
