Page number on first page

Hi Guys, I am not able to visualise the page number on the first one. I had modified the default page template ( I have delete the first model) inserting a token ({@page@} but still it doesn’t work. What I have to do?

You may have a page template override set on the first page. If it has a red triangle in Engrave mode, then Dorico won’t apply the default template to the page because it has been modified. Try removing any page override applied to the first page and see if your page number shows up. (Note: this will remove any override you want to keep as well, so be careful!)

Hi, sorry but no override exists. I made a new fresh template that works very well apart the page number on first page.

In Layout Options > Page Setup > Page Numbers, do you have Visibility set to “Always shown”?

Yes I do

The page number is visible only if I put the relevant frame inside of the music frame but not otherwise!

Ah, yes, I ran into this issue. Some tokens are only available within a context where they make sense, otherwise they show up blank. I’ve seen that a flowPageNumber is blank if placed between the end of one flow and the beginning of the next, if the token is placed before the ‘first’ flow page’s music frame. It’s possible that it was the ‘First’ page template that was defining what the page number could be, or mapping it to some value related to the actual pages, and that in its absence, Dorico doesn’t know how to work out the value of that token until there’s more information (in the shape of the music frame).

One solution: add back the First page template, make it identical to the default page template, set the option to only use it for the first flow, and see if that allows your page number to be shown outside the music frame? Otherwise…well, I never show page numbers on any page with a heading at the top, so I’m theorising rather than relying on experience here. But a workaround could be to use the First page template with a literal number in the page number text frame, if it’s only going to be used once. Maybe?

Thanks, I will try. :+1:

To get a page number on the first page of music:

  1. Add the page number token somewhere on the First page template (the First page template is used for the first page of music; the Default page template is used for subsequent pages)

  2. Make sure that page numbers are allowed above flow headings, if there is a flow heading on your first page, and if the page number is positioned at the top of the page.

The “First” template really ought to have page number, given that it can be used for each new flow (whose page number you might be trying to flick to); and that there’s an option to hide the number for page 1 in Layout Options.

I changed my first-page template to show the page number and then created a separate first-page-without-page-number to use for the very first page. I think this is along the lines of what Ben suggests.

You don’t need to create a separate one: just set the Layout Option:
