After trying to learn about MIDI CC lanes and track automation from the manual, this forum and by experimenting with it, I can only conclude that automation is Cubase is a hot mess. Broken in so many ways. It is ultra difficult to understand and apparently very buggy. How is this even possible in the DAW massively used for orchestral composition and scoring?
What setting do I have to change in order to use the “Move Vertically” feature when editing Automation Lane data in the same manner as it appears in the Controller Lanes in the Key Editor?
Current behavior of Automation Lanes:
[Automation Lane]
Desired behavior of MIDI CC lanes in the Key Editor:
[CC Lane]
Note that mouse cursor tool-tip labels the functions the same.
I would prefer that this feature did not create unwanted automation points.
Cubase has some excellent automation editing features, which are part of the reason why I switched from Logic Pro X. All the ways you can move and scale the selected points, and how easy it is to make a line between two points a curve show that a lot of thought went into them. I wish there were more tweaks available that I find myself needing at times, but what it has is still quite impressive.
Another thing to mention is the drawing of automation parameters, so much that I bought a drawing tab…
When recording pitch bend data in C13, it sounds all wrong.
It removes or simplifies the curve so much that it sounds like it’s pitching down and detunes for the entire bar.

Where it should have been something more like this:

The way curves and ramps for MIDI CCs are implemented in Cubase now makes them completely unusable! The sample rate used to translate them to discrete CC values is way too low. Look at how these ramps and curves get translated to note expressions (MIDI > Note Expression > Convert to Note Expression). The result of this modulation sounds horrible.

This needs to be fixed. Otherwise don’t put it as a feature cause this feature is unusable and sounds horrible. Us…
