Piano routed to channel 16 of an ARIA Player instance has no volume when it is soloed

I have a piano routed to a Garritan Steinway Piano in channel 16 of an ARIA Player instance. If nothing is soloed it plays with volume. If I solo it I can see in the ARIA player that the notes are getting there, but there is no sound. I also see no sound in the piano mixer in Dorico. If I solo the piano plus some other instrument, the other instrument plays correctly but the piano still has no volume. I tried editing the Expression map so that controller 1 is used as a secondary for volume, but that didn’t fix it. Any ideas? Is there any way to see in Dorico if the piano sound coming from the ARIA Player to Dorico has any volume?

I just tried muting the other instruments and the piano plays with volume in that case.

I am working on piano parts for a piano/vocal score and there is no piano in the orchestration, so I don’t need (or want) to hear the piano with the other instruments, so I could work around it by muting the other instruments, but that could result in a lot of clicking with songs utilizing all of the instruments in the orchestra. I do need to go back and forth between hearing the instruments and hearing the piano to make sure that the piano part will give the vocalists enough feel for the orchestration so that they won’t need a huge amount of rehearsal with the orchestra to get things right for a performance.

Another workaround would be to route the piano to a Halion Piano.

Presuambly, you’re using the Multi-output ARIA VST…?

Have you set the piano to its own output pair of channels?

Yes. I’ve just double checked to make sure nothing else is routed there. I also found an empty channel on a different instance of the ARIA multi and loaded it with the Steinway Piano and routed my piano there. It still had the no volume problem. So I routed the piano to a Halion Sonic piano and it plays correctly there when it is soloed.

You could upload a document with your setup, and I can see if I can figure out the problem.

Piano no volume when soloed.dorico (2.1 MB)

Your piano plays the dynamics correctly here (on Windows)

Is that with the Piano soloed? I just opened the project and on my Mac, it has no volume.

I muted the other instruments that play in the 2nd flow so I could hear the piano over them. What I see in the mixer in write mode is volume coming out of the singer, Katrine’s, mixer and nothing on the Piano mixer. Katrine isn’t even in that flow and she is not on that channel. She is on the same ARIA multi, but she is on channel 3. The Piano is on channel 16.

Is there any reason for sound coming back from a VST on a different channel from what it went in on?

Somebody is going to ask me to apply the Playback template, and I guess I could to that on this test project, but in my main project, applying a playback template undoes my assignment of individual percussion instruments in a kit to different endpoints.

Yes.
I can’t use your whole playback because I don’t have that particular Garritan sound set (I only have GPO5) but creating an instance of Aria Multi and adding a Garritan piano to that slot plays back perfectly.

So what’s stopping you from creating your own Endpoints for the percussion and amending your Playback Template…

Just for fun, I soloed Katrine in the test project. And, sorry Katrine is on channel 1.

So, with Katrine soloed, I see the notes coming in on channel 16 in the ARIA multi, no notes on channel 1, but back in Dorico I see the activity on Katrine.

If I solo just the piano, I hear nothing. If I solo both the piano and Katrine, I see the notes in ARIA on channel 16 but the volume on the mixer coming through on Katrine.

When I apply a playback template, after saving the endpoint configuration with the individual percussion instrument endpoints and putting it into the playback template, when I apply the playback template, it routes all the the instruments in the kit to the same endpoint. I’ve described this in much more detail in another thread.

Sorry, I can’t help more as I don’t have your particular sound set.

But, in general I would create Endpoints on separate files that only contains the instruments for that Endpoint. That way there is no possibility of confusing Dorico.

So, for each channel used by percussion, I would create a project and then an endpoint configuration from it? In my main project what would the order of the endpoint configuration files need to be in the playback template? Are they ever going to conflict? Are the endpoint configurations executed in the order they appear in the playback template? If the whole kit gets assigned to the same channel in the first endpoint configuration (which looks very much like what is happening to me), will succeeding endpoint configurations with only a subset of the instruments in the kit in them overwrite what was set in the first endpoint configuration without affecting the the other instruments in the kit?

I’m afraid I’m spending far more time dealing with Dorico’s quirks and on this forum than I am making progress on my project.

I suppose it’s worth my time going into the future to make the test projects and create endpoint configurations from them.

It would probably be simpler if you used the factory sound sets rather than Garritan (and accept the sonic differences)

Setting up Dorico for 3rd party sounds requires some learning. There are numerous tutorials on Percussion Maps, Expression Maps and Playback Templates.

The Piano is set to output 1 & 2, which is the same as the Alto Flute. If you’ve Solo-ed the piano, thus muting the Flute, that might cause a problem.

I’d put the piano in a separate VST instance.

Thanks. I assumed I had set all of the channels when I set up ARIA. I should know better having gone through all of that in detail when I set up Logic Pro to play my Finale generated files for my demo.

I have to apologize. This was a stupid mistake on my part.
