thanks for the dump files. They are all crashes in HALion Sonic SE and what is more, the crashes dumps are - though at least the third one is from just 2 days ago - from the old Dorico 3.5 and not 5. So it appears that you are sometimes still running Dorico 3.5, may I ask for what purpose? Because you can’t get sound out of Dorico 5?
Or differently asked? What is your current status with Dorico 5, what is or are your problems with it?

Hi Ulf,

I have not upgraded to Dorico 5. I have 3.5 only. Is this not compatible with Windows 11? I’m reluctant to spend another chunk of money on the upgrade unless I have to.

I’m sure that Ulf will figure out the problem on your computer and get you running again.

After that, if there are things that you like about Dorico, and you want to keep using the platform, then you will find literally hundreds of improvements between v3.5 and 5.1.

I’d recommend sitting down and looking at the Version History documents for version 4 and version 5, to see all the new features and fixes. I’d say no matter what type of music you’re doing, there will be countless things that make it easier/faster/better, making the small upgrade price worth it.

Not to mention that the old eLCC licenser server will close down in 2025, meaning that you won’t be able to install it on a new computer.

thanks for the clarification. I’m still confused, though.
You posted 3 crash dumps which show the audio engine going down because of a crash in HALion Sonic SE.
Two of the crashes happened on March 30th and one recently on May 6th.
The dumps tell me that on March 30th you had HALion Sonic SE (aka HSSE) Version 3.4.0 installed and during the next crash it was HSSE Version 3.5.10. On May 6th however it is back to 3.4.0. How did you get into this situation?
Dorico 3.5 is still compatible with Win 11, I have it still running on my own Win 11 machine.

If I can get the sound to work on my new laptop I may upgrade but if there if not, there’s even less reason to upgrade!

thanks for the data. The logs show that you have hardly any sound contents files installed, so no wonder that you don’t get sound. Please get the Dorico 3.5 Sounds Installer package.
You can download it via our website at Dorico 3.5 Updates and Downloads | Steinberg and then install it.
Let me know if you encounter any difficulties.

Hi Ulf,

I went to that page, downloaded the Dorico Pro 3.5 Sounds Installer package for Windows.

I then clicked on that folder.

It contained 1 folder called “additional content”
and 4 files:

  • Halion Sonic SE Windows installer package

  • an id file which wouldn’t open

  • a Library manager which when I clicked on it, told me another version of the thing was already installed so was not possible to install this version. It said to configure or remove the existing version of the product go to add / remove programs

  • a Setup application which, when I clicked on it, did nothing.

So I clicked on Halion Sonic SE and it then offered me 3 options: modify, repair or remove. I couldn’t see any “install” option. I presume this means my pc thinks I have Halion already installed. So I tried “modify” and followed the prompts.

I then opened Dorico 3.5 and it had the same problem, no sounds.

I’m sending the diagnostic report files again.

Should I remove Halion entirely drom add /remove programs? Should I try “repair” when I click on the installer package?!

Thank you so much - it works now!

I am embarrassed to say that I forgot to switch one component on which wasted some time. Dorico sounds were definitely not working previously but I could have saved you a good deal of time once you had installed the missing components. I’m very sorry about that!

It now sounds fantastic through my speakers!

I have Dorico 5.1.40.2138 on Windows. I’ve confirmed that Halion is installed. However, in Play | VST and MIDI it does not appear. I’m stumped! Thanks!

sorry to hear about your trouble.
Please create in a Dorico a new project from piano template, enter a handfull of notes and then do from Dorico’s menu Help > Create Diagnostic Report. The corresponding zip file please post in a reply here. Thanks

Hi @wwzeitler , thanks for the data.
My first verdict would be, that you don’t have any VSTInstrument loaded that could playback. You have a lot of plug-ins and also HALion 7 and HALion Sonic7.

What if you choose from the menu Play > Playback Template and try to apply one of the templates, what does happen. Can you see in the VSTInstrument tab anything getting loaded?

In Play > Playback Template I have “Halion Sonic Selection” selected.
