Playback technique for falls

Absolutely nothing. It will play given what I’ve seen in your score.

If it doesn’t, you’ve done something wrong in the expression map. Or changed the wrong expression map.

Strange. I haven’t edited the expression map, but it still doesn’t play. Do you have the Garritan JABB sounds loaded? If so, could I send you the file to see if you can figure out why it’s not working?

Or better yet, a Zoom session…?

Why don’t you upload the Dorico file?

I only have a very very old version of JABB from like more than 15 years ago, before there was ARIA player, so I don’t think it will help. I probably removed it because it is so old.

But I can still look at your map.

Your map is correct and your symbol is correct.

I found out I must have upgraded JABB to ARIA at some point (and forgotten) because I do have it.

Your fall does not play back at first. However, when I make the notes much higher, your fall does play back:

Strange. I moved my notes up to that hi B, and the falls still don’t trigger.

Also, I haven’t seen any window that has the markings that I’ve used. Where would I go to change the ^ marcato to trigger as a staccato?

Try playing it a few times. The falls don’t play the first time then if I stop and rewind and play again, you can hear them. It seems kinda random.

I just played it 8 times, rewinding each time. The falls still don’t trigger. It’s not that important, really. It’s just frustrating knowing that it can be done only I can’t get it to do it. The only time I miss the falls is when I’m sending someone a demo of an arrangement I’ve done for them. I just have to explain that there are falls in the arrangement that aren’t on the recording.

Thanks for your input!

I believe I found the problem. I can get them to play consistently now.

The problem seems to be how early Dorico is triggering the CC value before the note. A lot of libraries need for articulations to be triggered a bit before a note instead of right on the note onset, so that’s what Dorico does, but in this case it is not doing what you would want. It seems to prevent ARIA from realizing that the fall is associated with that note because it is just a hair too early.

In your JABB Trumpet expression map, go into the Playback Options Overrides section, and find this option and set it for 0 ticks:

I excitedly changed the setting you mentioned to 0, but it still doesn’t work! Argh!

They play consistently in the file you just sent me:

Two possibilities here. Either it is not the same version of JABB (your ARIA players loaded empty so I had to manually load the JABB trumpet to hear it), and the version of JABB that you have behaves differently. Or it is a behaviour difference in the ARIA player version.

Or it is a behavior difference between Dorico 5 and 6 (I am on Dorico 6).

I’m on Dorico 5. Maybe I’ll try upgrading. Thanks so much for spending time on this. I really appreciate it.

You can also try updating your ARIA player. See this thread:

It is a bit confusing but ARIA 2.026 is actually older than ARIA 1.980 because MakeMusic messed up and made a mistake.

Great. I’ll try updating both.

I just updated my ARIA player too and now it opens your file with the trumpet already loaded correctly. And plays back the falls correctly as before.

I’ll try updating Aria right now and let you know the results.

Hi,

Just FYI - I started Dorico 5 for the first time in a while (still had it on my system) and opened the latest file that you sent and confirmed that the falls are NOT playing back on Dorico 5 for me but ARE playing back on Dorico 6.

Ah, good to know. I updated Aria, and now Dorico won’t play back at all and keeps crashing. Time to upgrade to Dorico 6.

It works!!! I’ll have to mess around with it to see if I can adjust the length of the falls. But at least they’re playing. Progress!

As long as I’ve got your attention, how can I make the marcato ^ articulation trigger a staccato sound?

In the case of JABB it seems like they didn’t sample real marcatos or real staccatos and just “simulate” them.

However you can get the notes to be shorter by adjusting the Playback Options Overrides in the expression map:
