I have a score with a tall guitar part, with chords, on a single staff.
I’ve also got bass and drums.
If I set minimum gaps large enough to accommodate the tall guitar part, there’s a lot of empty space between bass and drums.
Is it possible to set minimum gaps per particluar staff anywhere in Dorico?
I see the variants, staff to staff group, staff to staff etc, but so far it appears as if you’re stuck with whatever setting for all cases.
What would you do? I tried “Automatically avoid collisions,” but the result looks chaotic with different spacing everywhere.
I’d like consistent spacing with values I can control, in the best case scenario…
No.
Could you upload some screenshots - or even better, a project - with some examples?
Sorry, no, client work, copyright issues.
There’s been a thread revived like yesterday or the day before where that issue was solved using a 0-line staff to fake that bigger gap
A combination of adjusting the minimum gaps and also ideal gaps, which add extra space between staves with sticking-out material, could help.
Would you have a link for that…?
In order to leverage Minimum Gaps, “Automatically avoid…etc” has to be activated, correct? The problem with this solution is that the gaps then become variable depending on the staff content in any particular system.
One possible solution might be to provide a means in Engrave to select a particular staff throughout the score… or possibly create a category exception, or another category for guitar and other fretted single-staff instruments in the rules.

I think the thread that @MarcLarcher means is this:
Typically in an orchestral score, there is additional vertical space above the string section. Sometimes this is to allow for rehearsal letters, tempo alterations, etc., but often it just exists to make it easier for the conductor to look down and instantly recognize Vln I. Layout Options/Vertical Spacing allows for a lot of settings, but unless I’m mistaken there’s no way to always create additional vertical space above/below certain staves in the score. Finale’s solution is the “Add vertical …

Thanks so much ! I’ll report back…
you should find a zero-line
Found it OK, still trying to config it. Hiding the rests is in Layout Options>Players (which unf hides em everywhere) - but I’m still seeing other artifacts, like key sig, time sig, and barlines… Is it possible to hide all that stuff?

key sig, time sig, and barlines… Is it possible to hide all that stuff?
It might be easiest to put a local open meter at the beginning of that staff. This should remove all the barlines.
Position the caret at that staff > open the Time Signature popover (Shift+M) > type Open > press Alt/Opt+Enter to close the popover but make it a local time signature.
You should be able to do the same for key signatures (make it atonal etc) but make sure to close the popover with Alt/Opt+Enter.

Position the caret at that staff > open the Time Signature popover (Shift+M) > type Open > press Alt/Opt+Enter to close the popover but make it a local time signature.
If I select the time signature in the Zero staff, 1st bar, and do opt-enter, it makes all the other staves open meter except the Zero staff.
If I select the first “rest,” it makes the first 4 bars open meter with a single bar rest, and leaves the remainder alone.
So far, no dice - and it’s making a big dent in the workday.
Gonna have to settle for “Automatically Adjust…” and just tolerate the uneven spacing.
Can you upload your project or PM me it?
