I’ve been working on the Modern Drummer. After the discussions in various threads it’s clear that the only good way to make percussion kit work on a standard staff is to:
So far this is where I am. As cymbals use same or similar playing techniques (now called playback techniques), it’s not easy to use the same line for two different cymbals, as it would not be possible to distinguish between cymbal+PT combination.
However, cymbals and bells could use the same line as long as they use different noteheads. For this reason I’ve used the large X as a choke symbol, so it’s not confused with muted cowbell. For the same reason I use ornamented x as Normal PT for crash, splash.
Note: the italics font in the pdf indicates the same instrument, different PT. Normal font indicates where a new instrument starts.
Robby, please let me know what you think.

Looks pretty good…
It took me a minute to see that the instrument was under the staff…
The only thing I would change… is you have “low” cowbell placed above the “high” cowbell… and same for the Crash cymbal. I would follow the idea of higher on the staff, higher the sounds. If you can, change the order of cowbells and crash cymbals.
Aside from that, it makes total sense, and would be “easy” for a drummer to understand.

I reordered cymbals and bells so that high is higher. I also split the kit in two, so now there is white and sparkle kit (difference is just in the extras).
It should now be possible to load and apply playback techniques with a playback template. If somebody could test if it works on their installation, that would be great, the files are here

Excellent work! I think it looks great!

Robby, could you share your method for adding playing techniques to the dialog in Edit Drum Kit and Precussion Maps that comes up? I’m using SD3 and it has 20 different techniques for Hi-hat. Thanks!
