DISAPPOINTED! Too many errors and tinkerer mentality.
I haven’t given up hope for a long time, I’ve been waiting for an integrated step sequencer in Cubase for a long time. Now it’s here! And it doesn’t have undo/redo? Did I miss something? I just turned the Pulse knob, then all my data was deleted and I couldn’t undo it!
Other errors and dubious features:
-
In the new drum machine: did some sound design, then worked on something else, closed the drum machine, opened it again…and then undo/redo doesn’t work anymore, so has no effect on the settings I made before (e.g. cutoff)
-
No undo/redo in the step sequencer. If this is really the case, then now is the time for me to say goodbye to Cubase when it comes to beat productions. Still ok for editing.
-
No scaling in the drum machine! The window for decoupling remains just as small and looks ridiculous.
-
No additional commands in the step sequencer when holding down the Cmd / Shift key + clicking/dragging in the individual cells. Here you could have set the velocity, for example, just as it works in the Midi Editor. Too complicated for basic things.
-
Moving tracks to the LEFT does not work in the mixer if you are exactly on the left dividing line (where the hand then appears) and you want to move to the left.
The same applies to the right: If you are exactly on the right dividing line where the hand appears, you cannot move the track to the right. -
Disappearance and reappearance of the new automation elements when switching from pointer to range tool. Unbelievable that this is not noticed immediately.
Edit:
-
The new volume plugin: Click+drag does not pull the fader as expected, but the fader moves slowly behind it. (I once made a setting for the normal channel fader so that when you click ABOVE or BELOW the fader, this is exactly what happens as soon as you hold down the left mouse button in that area. But this should NOT happen if you want to drag the fader of the new volume plug-in DIRECTLY up or down).
-
Media Bay deleted and empty. We already know this from the update from C12 to C13. And apparently nothing has been learnt here! Unbelievable. Are Mac users now supposed to search the web again to find out which files they need to delete in the Finder? No information about this?
-
Mixer Overview does not display the area correctly and does not work properly when moving.
-
Plugin names and controls inconsistent in the mixer at certain zoom settings, resulting in the plugin names being cut off again despite a larger zoom setting (although they were already fully visible at a smaller zoom setting).
-
In the new drum machine: You select a pad and then set the Pad FX (e.g. Filter Cutoff), then switch to another pad, and now Cubase automatically switches the focus to BitCrusher and leaves the filter effect focus. Very inconvenient if you want to set the filters for different pads.
…to be continued.
The whole thing shows (once again) that the Steinberg Cubase developers don’t seem to use Cubase to make music (see new drum machine videos + step sequencer) or do much audio editing. But the main thing is a new shimmer verb - or almost embarrassing, the new ‘next door effect’, or wow, now comes a volume fader that doesn’t work and in my opinion also seems too ‘bloated’. Something as simple as this could have been kept simple. You don’t need a huge Steinberg logo at the bottom, which is simply unsexy in 2024 when you’re working on a Macbook.
It’s just such a shame that Steinberg doesn’t manage to bring new tools on board that at least replace the third-party plugins, even if you’ve already bought them because they’re better; but they’re not better, they’re worse. Unfortunately. A real pity.
I made videos of all of the bugs.
