(SOLVED) Long recording issue

Hi I have an issue with cubasis 3.7.5 when I record multitrack for more than 60min. The application simply crashes and closes automatically. My recording file gets damaged and in summary I lost my recording session. I have tried in different iOS devices, iPad 10, iPhone 11, iPhone 7. All off them with the last iOS and the behaviour is exactly the same. I have recorded with different interfaces and the issue is the same, after pressing stop recording, application closes and I lost the recording. I’m using the behringer XR18, behringer Flow 8, and also made a test without interface, only audio from phone mic and is exactly same issue. Can you please help me on this?.

It’s a fair guess that a multitrack recording going beyond 60 mins is using up all of your iPhone’s RAM, and that’s why Cubasis is crashing.

Cubasis has to store all your recorded track data until you close the Project, and depending on how many tracks, that could be a LOT of data.

A newer M-Series iPad will give you double the RAM of an iPhone 11, but it to, will eventually run out of RAM.

Maybe what you need is to record to a computer, not a mobile device.
OR, break up your recording into manageable parts, if possible.
Such as 45 minute sections.
That’s what I’d try.
I’d save my empty multitrack project setup as a template, which I’d duplicate and renumber for each section. You can do all that within Cubasis.

In the template, I’d remove any plugins I wasn’t using;
For example, the following plugins are loaded by default in a New Project.
Insert Effects: Channel Strip, StudioEQ
Send Effects: Reverb
Mixer, Master fader: Master Inserts, Brickwall

I’d replace all those and any other plugins I’m not using.
from each and every Insert Effects, Send Effects, and Master Inserts with None (no instrument or effect).

Otherwise, a computer might be your best solution.

Thanks for the hint. I use the iPhone to record my shows due to portability’s benefits is it 500GB storage space. I was using another iOS app called DAW multitrack recording, were I have recorded longer than 3 hours session without problem and the 18 tracks of my mixer at the same time in only one session, my iPhone is dedicated for this purpose and only had this app installed. I decided to buy Cubasis because I’m Cubase user and want to work on the same environment and have the possibility to transfer my projects. Is there some way to route the storage option to be in the “Hard disk” of my iPhone instead of the RAM? I think this is how the App DAW multitrack recording application works. it would be simply perfect. I tried recording 20 min session only, no effects, buffer at the maximum in Cubasis, airplane mode, in iPhone and got same error in all my iOS devices when I use cubasis. 20 min recording in 18 tracks should be enough but cubasis is failing on this matter even though if offer the possibility to record more tracks. Any help?

Welcome back, Luis,

I’m glad you provided more information, such as you’re a Cubase user.

Here’s another solution for you, AUM and Audioshare.
AUM records directly to file(s) or a single file, depending on the routing you set up.
Or maybe you just have one input, your iPhone built-in microphones.

AUM records directly to the AudioShare file structure, which can be added to the Files app’s Sidebar. That’s my suggestion when using Audioshare.

Together, AUM and AudioShare offer a very versatile solution for all iOS/iPadOS musicians.
I consider them essential musician apps for iOS, especially iPadOS musicians.

My other 2 essential iOS musician apps, if you use MIDI, are: MIDI Wrench and MIDI Layers by 4Pockets.

When using Cubasis, here’s a very helpful tip for you:
Do a fresh device restart, run AUM and set the Buffer Sample Rate and Buffer size, and then leave it running. No need to open any Nodes or add anything else to AUM.
I recommend 48K hz and a Buffer Size of 256 or 512.

Now run Cubasis and it will use the buffer you created in AUM.
This is documented within the Cubasis manual, stating that it will use an audio buffer already created by another audio device.
This is typical behavior of audio apps in the iOS world.

If you think the Buffer is too small or too large, no problem.
You can change the buffer settings in AUM, at any time, as needed.

This is a fix for crackling playback and other issues.
Ever seen the Cubasis message,
“Another device is already using the Audio engine” ??
That’s a direct reference to an already existing audio buffer, which Cubasis is recognizing.

Together, AUM and AudioShare will not set you back much cash.
They’re worth every penny.

Hope this helps you,

John

Thank you John for your quick reply. I have Aum and Audioshare, however I paid for the full version of cubasis because I wanted to go to the next level of my setup and replace my DAW application (Cheaper than AUM and Audioshare) and being more powerful and simple to use than the combination of these aplications. I just want to record my songs into a single application as I’m doing now with my current app, and I just bought Cubasis because “is more powerful” and complete, it is at least 10 times more expensive than my cheap daw application, and I got the surprise that I cannot even record a session of 20 min because the application Crashes due to a wrong development. It offers to record up to 24 channels but you cannot even record 20min with 18 channels. Really frustrating!!!
