Sound not coming out of headphones

Sound from Cubase (14) is coming out of my laptop speakers fine, but not from the headphones. And yes the headphones work fine with other apps. Help?

Hi,

which Cubase version do you use?
If it’s Pro than check if this little button in Control Room is activated:

If it’s not that you would have to provide more info like audio interface, ASIO driver, F4 audio connections > outputs (and control room).

Hi,

Are you on Windows or Mac? What kind of Audio Device do you use?

Are they (the speakers and the headphones) handled as one device (from the system point of view)? Or can you see two independent devices?

I should have written “built-in laptop speaker.” No other speakers at this point. It’s windows machine.

It would be so much easier if only you provided more info like…

If you open Studio/Studio Setup and click on Audiosystem - what kind of ASIO driver is selected?

Again, a little more info goes a long way…

It’s the Steinberg built-in ASIO driver. In the info box associated with that, all four items are “visible” and “active.”

Hi,

Which Cubase edition do you use (Pro, Artist, Elements, LE, AI)?

Could you please attach a screenshot of Studio > Audio Connections > Outputs and Studio > Audio Connections > Control Room (if available)?

This indicates, you are on Windows.

Hi @James_Loewen ,

we could start guessing again at this point or you could just provide the details necessary to help you. I really don’t get it - it’s you asking for help, not the other way round…

Elements. Yes it’s on a Windows laptop.

I appreciate your help. I’m not always sure how to answer your questions.

Please, let us know if our questions are difficult to answer!
Thank you for the screenshot. I’m afraid @Martin.Jirsak was asking for a different one…

Can you press F4 and click on the tab Outputs, please? That’s the screenshot that would be most helpful at this stage. (Studio > Audio Connections > Outputs refers to the tabs you see in Cubase, it’s another way to get there).

We are closing in on your problem :+1:

Here you go. (and thanks for making it so clear)

Thank you for the screenshots :+1:

I assume that Steinberg’s built in ASIO driver is not recognizing your phones ports. Please, try to download the ASIO4ALL ASIO driver which has solved issues like that in the past:

I keep my fingers crossed

I downloaded the software and loaded it, but was faced with a credit card info page with no cost information. Not a nice welcome, I think. Did I reach the wrong destination?

You must have accidently clicked on something else. ASIO4ALL is open source and free and a well-established ASIO driver. If in doubt delete everything and start from scratch, please. There should not be a pop up asking for credit card info!
ASIO4ALL.org is the official site - please make sure to decline everything apart from downloading the driver

Here’s a screenshot of the page I get. See the PC App Store in the url window. I am reluctant to go there again.

No, I wouldn’t do that! Chances are high that this will also install unwanted adware on your system.
I have just checked myself - you have to close a lot of ads before you see the simple ASIO4ALL VERSION 2.17 multi language link. That’s the one you want. It’s just a plain *exe with version name and no additional installers.

It’s disappointing to see so many ads that keep you from seeing that download link to say the least.

Unfortunatly, I cannot help you to navigate through these apps since they are location specific.
You will find it :+1:

When I first encountered that page I landed on one download-and-install that disabled my computer (I had to take it to a local shop to re-enable it). It feels rather like Indiana Jones in the viper pit.

Oh, I am really sorry to hear that! That’s the very first time I have heard anything like that from somone who has used the official ASIO4ALL to download the driver.

@all Anybody else experienced something like that??? If this is what’s to be expected I will refrain from suggesting this driver in the future.
Does anyone know a different site where it’s safe to download the ASIO4ALL driver? Since I don’t need this driver I can’t check. I downloaded the ASIO4ALL driver from the official page but did not install it. Looked safe to me, TBH.

Can you also post a screenshot of your Device Manager?
Have you checked any specific options in the Windows settings? Press the Windows key + I > System > Sound. Anything that strikes you as unusual or related to the problem at hand?

Maybe someone else who is working on a Windows laptop is willing to join the conversation - I am running out of ideas…

Again. What you have experienced is almost like the worst case scenario. I am sorry that this is causing so much trouble!

I don’t trust that site!
