SpectraLayers 12.0.10 Maintenance Update

Weak excuse for releasing something that is not ready at all.

I don’t have to make excuses, and I don’t think SL will be “finished” in the next update.
We’re on a journey with the developers that will make small advances with new technology.
There will be small and larger milestones from version to version.
But I personally don’t think it’s realistic to believe that everything will be “ready” in everyone’s expectations with the next fix.

Installation / Update was successful, but it still does not use my AMD GPU !!

Setting is “AMD Radeon RX 6700XT”

All AMD and NVidia users will have this problem until a later date, according to the release notes.

For balance, a competing product that is advertised as being able to unmix using GPU acceleration can in fact only use NVIDIA products, and at that, only certain models – for example, the current RTX 50x0 are not usable with that product, and AMD and Intel GPUs will most likely never be usable. Another product featuring unmixing does not offer any GPU option at all. Yet another one is Windows-only. So I think @Robin_Lobel and the team have done amazing work in producing a cross-platform solution that supports all major GPU manufacturers, even if there are some initial issues that have been recognised and are in the process of being resolved.

I agree 100% and am reminded of a quote from Arthur C. Clarke that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. If I had been shown this product 10 years ago I would not have believed it (but as I don’t believe in magic either, I would have suspected a fraud instead!).

Finally, can I just point out that SpectraLayers is so much more than just “Unmix Songs”?

Of course you don’t have to make excuses (lol), Steinberg does.
Or they should advertise and market SL12 with the tag that it doesn’t work as advertised.

We are not on any journey with any developer. We bought an app that doesn’t work as promised and was not ready for release.

On Mac SL11 works better and faster than SL12. Great progress!

Exactly! I do expect SL to work as expected and flawless. SL also has to be reliable in a scientific sense, means numerical accurate to the bit whenever possible.
SL needs upcoming releases every 3 or 4 weeks now for at least 6 to 10 times from now. Than it might be reliable, fast enough and a hard work horse for everyday editing, extraction and what not…

I know what you mean, but I still have to disagree with you.
No model out there is “finished” with this task. I feel like there’s a battle for first place in this new field. Just as AI advances, so too are audio editing and post-production. I see it as a “journey” with the publisher.
I hope this helps make myself clearer.

As the demixing tasks become more precise, the program will naturally become larger, and the processing time will increase. More work simply requires more attention, or how should I put it?

It’s always been this way, and with the advancement of technology, working methods are optimized and aligned, and everything becomes faster and more natural over time… A DAW with 5 VSTs like today, including plugins, was unimaginable 15 years ago. Serum 2, cranked to its max, currently makes every computer shake. In a few years, we’ll be kicking just thinking about it

I think the main issue here is that there is no SL12 demo version available, currently. So to try it you need to buy it. Now it turns out this release has issues supporting specific hardware. Either they should have released a demo OR should have stated that GPU support was experimental:
I agree though that this paradigm shifting toolset (demixing) is a journey and at the very least virgin territory for developers and users alike.

There’s a reason technology is often referred to as “bleeding edge”; there’s your clue.

Nobody has to buy it; that’s a personal decision. Rushing to purchase the first version or major revision of a software product always carries risk. Demo versions have usually been released within weeks of the initial release, and GPU support is not “experimental”, it’s been available in SL for years.

Finally, the SL12 licence will also allow SL11 to be used on the same machine, so perhaps try that try that while the issues with the early releases of SL12 are getting ironed out. If none of that helps, try using other products with the same feature set as SL12 – oh, wait – there are none.

Yes,… and no! A well working gui is not bleeding edge technology and also to implement proper selecting and sorting algorithms that work in O(n log(n)) are definetely also not bleeding edge technology in 2025.
Nope SL, as it still is today, needs a lot of improvement on stability and reliability from a programatic point of view. The concept of the program is indeed kind of bleeding edge and very very ingenious, there is no question about it.
I believe, grounded on my own experiance, that SL has lots of old code and data design, that just does not fit the increasing demands and would need a complete rewriting from the beginning. And yes, I do know, that this is definetely not something a developer has much fun doing so… and also this is something, that not everyone wants to hear, because it almost scratches on blasphemy for some.

Please recommend an alternative product with a feature set equivalent to SL12 that you believe is better.

This is not the topic of my answer. I just state my observation.

uh, yeah, this just isn’t cool

I know I will benefit from SL12, but this schoolyard teasing is unbecoming. I can’t stretch to the 90cu at this time; I just can’t…so you are saying pay to try? Ugh, I’ll wait until my priorities shift

I should think this comment would put every potential new user off; you are saying pony up for SL12, because you can no longer buy SL11? Not a pleasing argument

…I’m already sold…just don’t have the coin right now

Of course not, I was replying to someone who I assumed had bought an update to SL12 and wasn’t happy about it – yet.

Of course you can buy 11. It was the same price as 12. So you by 12 and install either or both.
