Spectralayers 12 won't utilize GPU

Greetings!
I have a problem, that my GPU idle when i’m unmixing the song. CPU under 100% load all the time. GPU only used 4gb of VRAM and has 30% load spikes for less than a second. That problem is for SL12. On SL11 a had noticed, that my old 1080 ti is faster, than a new 5070 ti. Whats the problem?
CPU : Intel 13600KF
GPU: NVidia 5070 ti.

Same here, same little GPU usage spikes - I posted this a couple of days ago :

I tested the use of the GPU (Windows 11, 13th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-13700, 2100 Mhz, 16 Core(s), 24 Logical Processor(s), Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti to unmix song (Vocals, Guitar, Bass and Drums - quality High) .)
I changed the GPU usage in Preferences from Auto to CPU and then GPU. In each case it took the same amount of time - about 5 mins. I then tried SL11 using the Extreme setting.

It took 2.5 minutes - certainly the quality was not as good but it used the GPU as expected.

Same here. Worked the first time, now it’s using CPU no matter what.

Same here. Only takes a couple of minutes but the CPU gets toasty warm.

Ya, this is a glaring issue. Just wait until their maintenance release. IDK how this made it past QA??

I’m kind of glad they did (or maybe knew/suspected and released anyway) as it put Version 12 in my ‘grace period’ to upgrade from 11. A recent sale they ran not too long ago, I jumped in for the Pro version.

Had they waited until perfection for a release, those of us who took that deal might have missed the grace period.

QA?

Same here with SLP 12 regardless of the preferences settings (auto/GPU).

My system specs:

  • AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (16+16 Cores)
  • Gigabyte B550 Vision D-P
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 128GB (4x32GB) DDR4 3600MHz C18
  • PNY NVIDIA RTX A6000 (Ampere) with 48GByte with Studio drivers
  • Seasonic PRIME TX-1000 80PLUS Titanium 1000 Watt
  • WD_BLACK SN850 2TB NVMe; PCIe Gen4 for system
  • Crucial P5 CT2000P5SSD8 2 TB for fast cache
  • 4x Crucial MX500 4 TB as 16 TB RAID 0 for big cache
  • LSI 8 port RAID Controller 8x 16 TB Toshiba Enterprise [MG08ACA16TE] as 104 TB RAID 5 for work files

Same here and I wonder why? It seems the CUDA/ROCm code isn’t ready. You would otherwise think, they solved this in SL 11 so it would be ported over but I suppose there is a lot more work involved in the SL 12 GPU version that it wasn’t ready at launch. Just my presumption.

Same here. On SL11 no problem and faster.

Same here…

I think that this problem not only on Windows. I am still on version 11, but here is the comment on YouTube:

“V12 is BUG ridden and IMPOSSIBLE to use on a MAC. Since v10 the Windows version has had GPU (unmix) acceleration, but the developer of SL is blaming apple because they don’t know how to use the GPU on a MAC. The MAC version is SO slow compared to other programs that DO use the MAC GPU. A 5 minutes song can take OVER 30 minutes to unmix a song. 0ther software unmixes the same song, same computer, esS than 6O seconds.”

The GPU is being utilized by others. A query on any of the search engines for programs using the M series GPU cores is full of “majors,” including a bunch of development/coding environments as well…(sigh)…/s~

Interesting all. The new SL12 Pro as a download program was over 4G while SL11 Pro was 1.6G, so I have to think there’s a lot more going on in SL12 Pro. I can choose to use my GPU in SL12 (it is saved) and it actually uses the same amount of GPU as SL11 - however - my CPU is def along for the ride - and there are those spikes others here are talking about. I used the ‘High’ setting and it took about 5 mins to unmix a five instrument song: Vocal, Lead guitar, acoustic rhythm guitar, electric bass guitar, and drums. This said, it did a nice job of it, and the pre-editing functions I used: Plosives, Noise, DeEss, Normalize, were very very quick. (BTW, Robin suggested not to get hung up on the ‘High’ setting in SL11 Pro as the middle setting (now called ‘Balanced’) produced similar results and did the job much faster, but I haven’t tried this yet so I can’t speak to the results. Anybody? ).

At this point I’m happy to see the new version, and I’m sure Robin will address whatever issues come up. On this note, the Mac issues I can’t speak to, I’m PC, but hopefully Robin will offer some help.

Re the GPU discussion, just thought I’d add this experience.

I had a look at my own prefs, which gave three AI options:
Auto - CPU - AMD Radeon™ Graphics.

Selecting AMD gives an error: Less than 6GB VRAM
I only have 486MB - not even close - but have you all checked?

Hope that helps,

VoiceDenoise activity:

These are screenshots of CPU and GPU during Unmix Song.
CPU use is consitantly high and GPU is only used in spikes. GPU memory use is about 5%.
Unmix drums is only using GPU so it is sort of a mixed bag. My setup is in my post previously in this thread.
@Robin_Lobel can you comment?

I’m PC, and I have now tried the ‘Balanced’ setting and the ‘High’ setting using the same song. What happens on my PC is - when I use High mode - SL uses the GPU (almost 6G of my 8G AMD card) but, when I use the Balanced setting the GPU is limited to .6G (6% of a G) and 22% of my CPU. Either mode still take 5 mins to do the unmix task.

What does this tell us? Well, offhand I’d say the behavior is making a decision as to use the GPU when the job is more difficult or more demanding and then virtually no GPU when the task is considered not as demanding. This is not what SL11 did so I think there something amiss here. Where is Robin on this? Robin?

They must know something…

Try selecting Sax & Brass only - the GPU works as it does in SL11. Is it a coincidence there is an ‘Unmix Sax & Brass First’ option?

EDIT: It only uses the GPU when selecting ‘High’ quality for me

I have 12GB of VRAM in my GPU… but it doesn´s work anyway.
