Straight wings on brackets

Is there any possibility in Dorico to have brackets with straight wings such as they are available in Finale (third bracket option on the picture below)?

You might be able to replace the bracket top and bottom in the Library->Music Symbols editor

Thank you for your answer!
Is it possible to do this directly in Dorico (I didn’t manage) or do I have to import a new graphic?

This was discussed in detail here:

Oh, sorry, I didn’t find this post.
Many thanks for redirecting me there!

You probably need to do it in Illustrator or Affinity Designer or similar and export it as SVG.

I needed this type of bracket wing for a project, too, so I added it to an edited version of the Bravura font. I’d be happy to share the file, if it would be helpful. (I’m on the road for several hours, so it couldn’t be right away…!)

Remember that variant fonts based on Bravura should be given a new font name, as per the Open Font Licence, to avoid any confusion – even if it’s just one glyph different!

Yes, that’s easy, just substitute :

  • uniE003 by uniE564
  • uniE004 by uniE565
  • uniE005 by uniE565 (you will need to adjust the Y position)
  • uniE006 by uniE564 (you will need to adjust the Y position)

Thank you!
If it’s easy to share, yes, I would be happy to have the file. Even though I thought rather to continue with the Finale Maestro font as it seems to be generally a bit lighter.

Very happy to help — I hope this will help you achieve the look you’re after! I’ve attached a font called FlatWings.zip (359.2 KB), which is essentially Bravura with new glyphs for the bracket wings.

It’s not meant to replace your document’s music font, but rather just to supply the different style of bracket.

Once you install the font, you can select new glyphs for your bracket wings via Library > Music Symbols.

Choose the Flat Wings font, select the Basic Private Use Area range, and the flat wings will appear within the first few glyphs:

Once you’ve replaced the top and bottom wing glyphs, things should start looking the way you want.

I also found it helpful to change this setting in Engraving Options:

If you need more detailed help, just let us know. Folks have had questions about the Music Symbol editor in the past, but once you get the hang of it, it’s fantastic!

Great, that works perfectly and is exactly what I was looking for.
Many thanks for sharing the FlatWings font!
