I watched the excellent YouTube video a couple of days ago that explained how to use Synth V with Dorico. I have installed Synth V, but it says it does not support musicxml files. But that is exactly what the presenter was using, so what is going wrong?
I think you need the latest beta version.
Jesper
This perhaps.

Thanks Jesele! That was the answer. Got it now.
Yes I had the same thing, went onto the Synthesiser V forum and downloaded the Beta.
It is fantastic and will help create rehearsal tracks for the choir. Only thing….it doesn’t do repeats. Just carries on singing as if repeats are not there. I guess a workaround would be to save the file under a different name, i.e. ‘name of piece rehearsal’, then copy and paste in the repeated bars and get rid of the repeats. that way the voice would sing through
Yes, I think in most cases it will be necessary to create separate files for each voice part, with no repeats. I’m still at the early learning stages with Dorico, so to test Synth V I created a few bars of Good King Wenceslas in Sibelius and exported them as musicxml. Synth V handles them very well - just a few tweaks to pronunciation needed. I think this will be a game-changer for choir rehearsal tracks!
Just finished producing first synthesiser V rehearsal tracks for a piece for the choir. It is soooo easy and the end result is just brilliant for this purpose. No more sraining my voice trying to sing SATB!!!
Anyone here who encounters melisma challenges? I tried different ways of inputting my lyrics and underscores. But Synth V does not give me what I need. For instance, in my example below, the “ing“ lands on the G, and the A simply gets ignored. I tried to find something in the online manual of Synth V, but there is nothing there that could help. Probably too early to expect that, since its still in Beta.
Thanks, robert

This would be entered as praying - + into the note editor box, (not the phoneme box). The ‘-’ extends a syllable and the ‘+’ ends the next syllable. If you have 3 syllables, then discover - + +
Actually, you should enter it differently in Dorico!
“Pray - ing” is very likely to get you what you want without further editing…. ![]()
ah yes, in Dorico that would be “pray- - ing”
Thanks, I tried that already… same result. Going to try @derAbgang ‘s method.
This works wonderfully, thanks; hopefully this will be more streamlined in the future. But this already makes me happy. Where did you get this info from?
Best regards, robert
EDIT: Oh wait… I omitted the “y“ in praying. Having the correct spelling makes it flawless.
I’m hoping they will add more classical voices in due course. The current ones are all pop/rock orientated, so they tend to bend the notes rather more than a classical singer would/should. It can be corrected to an extent by adjusting the curve, but I’m hoping they will address this. That said, it is still a wonderful tool for choir practice tracks.
Now I will have to learn the right way of spelling melismas, because I have many in my score that don’t work properly. Where can I find more info on this?
Indeed, I find it pretty amazing already. But being able to produce something more similar to a small church choir would be a dream. Maybe already having one good female and one good male voice, and then duplicating voices while changing them with vocoflex, will be an improvement.
There’s a bunch of online and local tools that will properly hyphenate your lyrics in any language!
Have you tried the doubling function of SynthV? If you have a variety of singers available, this will turn out fairly realistically I think, even though I haven’t tried it myself. If you mass select the events within SynthV and turn down the vibrato, both of those tools should go a long way! Again, I haven’t tried it myself though, being busy with christmassy stuff… ![]()
Yes, I tried the doubling. It’s not bad at all, but it does not really satisfy me; I choose fewer voices over the doubling.

Oh, great thanks a lot ![]()
One big problem I’ve found with xml import into Synth V 2 is that tied over notes are imported as two notes. For example if you have a half note tied over to a quarter Synth V puts the actually lyric on the half note and “la” on the tied over quarter note. It’s quite annoying with “la” popping up everywhere in a vocal. I’ve tried to find a cure for this with no luck. For a four part score of any considerable length this means a lot of editing.
